Impulse NGO Network invites applications for the Cross-Border Human Trafficking Journalism Fellowship. The Impulse Model Press Lab aims to bridge the gap between journalistic training, and sensitization to the issues surrounding human trafficking. It will help improve media coverage, and bring informed, impactful reports to the public.
They are inviting early-career and mid-career journalists from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and India with a keen interest and experience in reporting on cross-border human trafficking to apply to take part in the Impulse Model Press Lab Cross-Border Human Trafficking Journalism Fellowship program. As part of the Impulse Model Press Lab initiative, they will award one-year fellowships to four early-career journalists and four-week fellowships to mid-career journalists from each country to report on cross-border human trafficking in the region.
Fellowships
One-Year Fellowships:
This is a fellowship for ambitious early-career journalists from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar to build digital journalism skills and conduct sensitive reports on cross-border human trafficking in the region.
Impulse NGO Network will award four fellowships to one journalist from each country, who will be trained in digital reporting, with a specific focus on cross-border human trafficking. Fellows will participate in a two-day orientation and training workshop lead by experienced journalists and technical experts from each of the four countries, to build awareness and sensitisation to the issues of human trafficking and challenges of conducting in-depth, ethical and impactful reports.
Throughout the One-Year Fellowship, journalists will be mentored by experienced journalists and receive guidance and training from experts in areas of gender, psychology and law. Fellows will be exposed to cross country reporting, inter-related issues of human trafficking which include unsafe migration, an understanding of the economic situation of states/provinces, districts, townships and villages affected by cross-border human trafficking.
Four-Week Fellowship
Impulse NGO Network will run a Four-Week Fellowship for mid-career journalists from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar to conduct major in-depth reports on cross-border human trafficking in and across the neighbouring countries.
Journalists will build their networks across the different countries and will work with local journalists and experts to conduct their reports. Experienced journalists from a Core Committee will act as mentors to the fellows, providing them with professional guidance and support throughout the fellowship. Fellows will also engage with technical experts – lawyers, police officers, psychologists and gender specialists – and receive training in these areas to report sensitively and effectively on human trafficking issues.

Eligibility
The one-Year Fellowships will be awarded to early-career journalists with skills in digital media from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar who are interested in reporting on cross-border human trafficking in the region, and:
- Have 2-3 years of journalism or reporting experience
- Are skilled in a range of media (print, digital, audio and video)
- Are ideally already working with new media platforms or news organisations.
- Freelance journalists must be able to demonstrate links with media houses and previously published work.
- Must be able and willing to work in a partner country outside of their own for at least one month of the fellowship
- Must have strong social media presence or be willing to actively engage in social media as part of the fellowship
Journalists who are survivors of human trafficking, women and from marginalised castes are encouraged to apply.
The four-week fellowship is open to experienced mid-career journalists from India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal with a specific interest in cross-border human trafficking and strong reporting skills.
To be a part of this Fellowship, applicants must:
- Have 3 – 5 years of journalism or reporting experience
- Be English speaking, however, can work and publish in his/her local language
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and knowledge of issues related to human trafficking
- Obtain a recommendation from publisher/editor and agreement to undertake the fellowship and publish stories
- Receive consent from their respective Editor(s) to travel to two different countries to conduct reports on unsafe migration and cross-border human trafficking as part of the fellowship

Application
A panel of journalists from the Core Committee in each country will review Fellowship applications in July 2018. Selected candidates will be chosen for the high-quality of their application, their incisive reporting skills and experience, and their ability to work in a wide range of media with a focus on digital skills.
