Deadline: October 1, 2019

Know a non-profit making extraordinary contributions toward alleviating human suffering? Nominate them for the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize 2020!

The Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize is the world’s largest annual humanitarian award presented to nonprofit organizations judged to have made extraordinary contributions toward alleviating human suffering. The Prize is not only intended to recognize and advance the efforts of the recipient organization, but also to call attention to the worldwide need for humanitarian aid and to encourage others to expand their support.

Award

  • Selected nominee will receive $2 million in unrestricted funding.

Eligibility

  • Nominator
    • The nominator should have direct knowledge of the nominated organization’s work.
    • The nominator may not be an officer or employee—or any other individual receiving remuneration for his or her services from the nominated organization. Board members may nominate providing they receive no payment for their service.
    • The nominator may not be a family member of an officer or employee of the nominated organization.
    • The nominator may not be the founder of the nominated organization.
    • The nominator may not be a Conrad N. Hilton Foundation employee, board member, Prize juror or a family member of a Foundation employee, board member, or Prize juror.
    • The nominator may not be a Hilton family member.
  • Nominee
    • Nominees must be organizations, not individuals.
    • Nominees must be established, nongovernmental, publicly supported charitable organizations. U.S. Internal Revenue Service tax-exempt status—or the equivalent for international organizations—will determine eligibility. (International nominees will be contacted by the Foundation for appropriate documentation.)
    • Nominees must be legally established for at least five years in order to be considered.
    • Nominees must have audited financial statements for at least five years.
    • Nominees must have expenditures greater than U.S. $750,000 in their most recent audited fiscal year of operation.
    • It is strongly encouraged that if a nominee has multiple branch offices that the umbrella organization be the nominee.

Evaluation Criteria

The nomination letter should emphasize the organization’s accomplishments rather than future goals. Both historic and recent performance should be addressed. Following are elements to consider in describing your nominee’s work:

  • Extraordinary contributions toward alleviating human suffering
  • Established record of achievement
  • Demonstration of impact
  • Ability to serve as a model for other nonprofits
  • Demonstration of effective partnerships
  • Innovation in program design
  • Organizational capacity and administrative efficiency

Nomination

Once an organization has been nominated, the Foundation will contact the nominee directly to ask for additional information. They strongly encourage you to nominate an organization as soon as you are able, as your nominee will have limited time to submit materials. The steps are as follows:

  • Step 1: Create an account and password by visiting the Hilton Humanitarian Prize nominations portal
  • Step 2: Complete the nomination form and upload your signed nomination letter in English. Not to exceed four typed pages in 12-point font, the signed nomination letter should cite the reasons the nominee deserves the Hilton Humanitarian Prize. If you cannot upload a signed version of your letter, please upload it without the signature and either fax or mail a hard copy of the letter with your signature.
  • Step 3: The Foundation contacts the nominee for additional information and supporting materials.

A nominator may only nominate one organization per year. If more than one nomination is received for an organization, the first one received will be the nomination of record, unless otherwise directed by the nominee. All other nominations will be registered as letters of support; however, no more than three letters of support will be recorded.
