Princeton University is accepting applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). The program will select early-career scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. The number of candidates hired will depend on the qualifications of the overall applicant pools.
The fellowships will be awarded to scholars employed outside the United States who have a faculty appointment, a professional research appointment, or are an established independent scholar. They will also be expected to return to their positions at the conclusion of the fellowship. Lastly, they must have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement and unusual intellectual promise. Early-career scholars will be appointed at the rank of Visiting Research Scholar.
During the academic year 2021-22, the Fung Global Fellows Program theme will be “Sustainable Futures.” The Fung Global Fellows Program welcomes applicants from all disciplinary and inter-disciplinary fields – humanities, social science, natural science, engineering, technology, law, architecture – to examine varied notions and workable practices of sustainability.
Categories
Candidates will be considered in two categories:
- Postdoctoral Research Associates who received their doctorate from an institution outside of the United States and who, at the time of application, do not hold a tenure-track faculty appointment.
- Early-career Scholars employed outside the United States who have a faculty appointment, a professional research appointment, or are an established independent scholar in the designated theme of the program. Early-career scholars will be appointed at the rank of Visiting Research Scholar.
Fellowships for the Early Career and Postdoctoral fellowships are for the entire academic year, from September 2021 to June 2022.
Benefits
- Within the limits of its resources, it is the intent of the Program to provide a salary for Early Career and Senior Fellows that equal the normal salary paid to a Fellow at his or her home institution . In cases where the Fellow’s base salary scale at their home institution is significantly below the norm, salaries may be adjusted upward to take this into account. Postdoctoral Fellow salaries are set and updated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the level of support for the first year is determined by the number of full years of relevant postdoctoral experience when the award is issued. Fellows will be eligible for (health) insurance through the Princeton University benefits plan.
- Fellows will receive research funds.
- If completing a physical fellowship at Princeton, Fellows are given office space, computer access in a suite dedicated to the Program, as well as access to the Firestone Library. The Program assists the Fellows in finding appropriate housing through the University Housing Office and private landlords if a Fellow wishes it.
- If completing a physical fellowship at Princeton, the Program will pay transportation costs for each Fellow, and his or her spouse or domestic partner and for their child/children, with the following limitations: It will pay for the most economical means of transportation for one roundtrip for the Fellow, spouse, partner and children from and to his or her home institution. Travel funds for spouse, partner and children are restricted to persons accompanying a Fellow for a substantial period of time, by which we mean at least two months. These funds are not intended for dependents taking brief holidays in the United States.
- If completing a physical fellowship at Princeton, the Program will pay for the shipment of books and papers that are necessary for the continuation of research, but not for the shipment of household goods. It should not normally be necessary to bring many books. The University Library possesses over five million books and others are quickly available on inter-library loan. Fellows are advised not to send research materials by sea, since they are often months late in arriving. Since Fellows are expected to secure furnished lodgings during their period of residency, the Program will provide only limited funds for shipment of household goods each way.
Eligibility
- To be eligible, applicants must have received their Ph.D. or equivalent no earlier than September 1, 2011.
- Fellowships will be awarded on the strength of a candidate’s proposed research project, the relationship of the project to the program theme, the candidate’s scholarly record and ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the program.
- All candidates must be based outside the United States.

Application
Applicants must apply online. Applications due by November 16, 2020 (11:59 p.m. EST).
The following items must be submitted by the applicant, in English, by November 16, 2020:
- Cover letter (1.5 pages maximum)
- Curriculum Vitae (including publications)
- Research proposal (maximum of 3 pages, single spaced)
- One writing sample (article or book chapter, maximum of 50 pages)
- For those applicants with a current faculty appointment or a professional research appointment, an official letter from the applicant’s current employer affirming that, should an offer be made, the applicant would be permitted to accept it and to spend the academic year at Princeton University. - The names and email addresses for three referees, who will be contacted automatically by the online application system with an invitation to upload their letter of recommendation to the system by the application deadline.
