Deadline: November 15, 2021

Applications are open for the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) Junior Fellows Program 2021/2022. The Junior Fellows Program at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) is a prestigious program for exceptionally qualified early-career scholars to conduct innovative AI research as Assistant Professors in a unique, supportive, and interdisciplinary environment with unparalleled opportunities for impact in research, policy, and education.

Program Details

HAI was established to support innovative AI research that bridges disciplines or fields. For this reason, they aim to appoint and support promising researchers working at intersections often overlooked by traditional academic departments, in addition to outstanding researchers pursuing core disciplinary topics.

HAI Junior Fellows are Assistant Professors (Research) who will be affiliated with both HAI and a traditional department (e.g., Computer Science or Psychology). They will contribute to HAI’s mission by conducting and publishing research, teaching undergraduate and/or graduate classes, mentoring students, and participating in the rich intellectual life on campus.

Becoming a HAI Fellow will provide an extraordinary springboard to launch a young researcher’s career, including generous research support, access to students, and a low teaching load.

Benefits

  • Fellows will receive a competitive salary and generous research/start-up package.

Eligibility

  • Open to applicants from all areas of research related to artificial intelligence, spanning theoretical foundations, systems, software, applications, and social impact.
  • They are particularly interested in applicants doing research at the frontiers of artificial intelligence with other disciplines, including but not limited to the humanities, business, education, law, medicine, and physical and social sciences.
  • Applicants must have completed a doctoral degree by the position start date, must have demonstrated the ability to pursue a program of research, and must have a strong commitment to teaching. A successful candidate will be expected to teach one course per year at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels.

Terms of Appointment

  • HAI Junior Fellow/Assistant Professor (Research) appointments will be for a non-renewable five-year term. They will have academic council status, enabling them to be principal investigators on externally funded grants.
  • Fellows will teach one class per year for the appointing academic department.
  • Fellows will be expected to participate in HAI community activities, in addition to meeting the expectations of a Stanford faculty member.

Application

The application materials below must be submitted:

  • Cover Letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research Statement
  • Teaching Statement
  • Publication List
  • Three Reference Letters
