Applications are open for the Thomson Reuters Report on Food Security & Rural Development in Latin America 2023. Food security is a global concern. Food prices have skyrocketed. But what do policymakers do to solve these problems and who ensures that the rural poor and their communities are heard, and their stories told?

The United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is sponsoring this course, which will create experience and increase knowledge of the issues facing rural communities, help journalists present new points of view and promote debate on how smallholder farming can respond to growing demand for food and on the essential need to support tailor-made rural transformation. that food insecurity, climate change and economic uncertainty are intensifying.

They invite journalists from Latin America to register for this workshop, which will cover topics such as food security, food production, indigenous peoples, markets and climate.

Benefits

  • Participation will give you access to IFAD’s leading experts, who study how to address the challenges of climate change, food security and production issues, in a context of rising prices and economic consequences and global supply problems. You will have the opportunity to interview them about the problems of their country.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be full-time journalists or regular contributors to media outlets based in the following countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of two years of professional experience, have a good level of spoken and written Spanish and explain through their applications why they will benefit from participation in this course and how they intend to use what they have learned in their professional work.
  • They would also like to see professional evidence of your interest in the field of rural village and development issues.
  • Applicants must have access to a minimum Internet speed of 8 MB/second. (You can check the speed of your device in www.speedtest.net.) Applicants will also need access to a computer to participate in the training; Participation from a mobile phone will not be possible.
  • Once selected, applicants will also be asked to submit a letter from their editor supporting their participation in the program, including a commitment to publish the story they will produce if they participate in the mentoring component of the course. TRF will only request this information once candidates have been selected for the course.

Application

Applicants will be required to upload the following documents as part of the application process:

  • Two relevant work samples (maximum file size: 5 MB). Radio and television journalists may submit broadcast transcripts, a brief summary and/or links to online versions. If possible, participants are encouraged to provide information on the dissemination and scope of their publications.
  • A biography of up to 250 words describing your career.
  • A statement of between 250 and 500 words describing how you expect to benefit from this course, how you intend to use what you have learned in your professional work, and any factors affecting your work as a journalist that may be considered relevant to your application.

The course will take place online from June 5, 2023 to June 8, 2023.
