Applications are open for the Mongabay Internship Program 2024. The internship is an opportunity for emerging journalists to gain firsthand experience in reporting and contribute to impactful, evidence-based environmental journalism. The Mongabay Internship Program is a unique, hands-on program designed to mentor budding journalists and expand their skill set. This six-month journey allows interns to delve deep into critical conservation topics, engage with experienced journalists and see their work resonate with millions of readers worldwide.

The interns will be writing roughly six news stories on a variety of conservation and environment topics over a course of a six-month commitment. Topics will be assigned to the interns by one of Mongabay editors. The Mongabay interns will work closely with Mongabay journalists and receive writing guidelines and feedback on their news stories before publication, receive a deeper understanding of journalistic programs and processes at Mongabay and receive one-on-one training and mentorship from the editors who work with the fellow.

Eligibility

  • They are seeking articulate, curious individuals driven by strong values and a passion for environmental journalism.
  • Applicants should possess excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, and a readiness to learn and adapt.

Application

Applications must be submitted in English. Applicants are required to submit the following documents (it is strongly recommended that you have these items prepared before beginning the application process):

  • Resume
  • Cover letter
    • Indicate why you are interested and what values & skills you can contribute to Mongabay.
  • Motivation questions (you can find them in the application form)
  • Submit a writing sample from a journal entry or blog article (600 words max.)
    • Or you can choose one from the following three articles to complete a writing sample
      • Beyond the numbers: Human attitudes and conflict with lions (Panthera leo) in and around Gambella National Park, Ethiopia
      • Changes in the West African forest-savanna mosaic, insights from central Togo
      • Thismia kelabitiana (Thismiaceae), a new unique Fairy Lantern from Borneo potentially threatened by commercial logging
  • Optional: submit an additional writing sample of your own (600 words max.)
