Deadline: January 31, 2024

Applications are open for the ICLRS Young Scholars Fellowship on Religion and the Rule of Law 2024. The Program is designed primarily for early-career academics interested in the field of religion and the rule of law from an international and human rights perspective.

The coursework in this advanced certificate program in religion and the rule of law prepares young scholars to teach a course on law and religion from national, international, and comparative perspectives. Each morning, participants attend two 90-minute classes led by a variety of distinguished law and religion scholars, all of whom are recognized as leading experts in the field. These lecturers—who come from various national, cultural, religious, and/or professional backgrounds—discuss law and religion topics from their unique perspectives. Morning classes feature casebook lectures, Q&A, small-group discussions, and other pedagogical methods. By the end of the course, participants should feel prepared to teach a course on comparative and international law and religion, adapted to their respective locales.

Each young scholar who completes the Program will receive a certificate of completion. This is not an academic credential from Oxford University or Brigham Young University; however, it is becoming a recognized international reference in the fields of law and religion, international human rights law, and comparative constitutional law.

Financial Aid

  • Student grants are available for admitted students who otherwise would be unable to attend. Grants cover travel, accommodation, tuition, and some food expenses.

Eligibility

  • The Program is intended primarily for young professors, lecturers, and fellows, as well as advanced-level graduate students. Current employment in an academic job, or enrollment in a graduate program, is not required, however.
  • Graduate students in the late stages of their PhD dissertation or master’s thesis (in a terminal-degree master’s program) are welcome to apply, but their dissertation or thesis should be on a topic related to religion and the rule of law.
  • Applications are also welcome from individuals working for international organizations, religious and human rights NGOs, or organizations engaged in interfaith dialogue.
  • You must have an interest in publishing scholarly work. In the months leading up to the Program, you will begin working on a scholarly article; during the Program, you will participate in intensive writing tutorials focused on readying the article for publication.
  • You must be orally fluent and demonstrate an ability to do written academic work in English. Finalists will participate in a Zoom interview, where their oral fluency will be evaluated.
  • Students currently in undergraduate and JD programs should not apply, but we would welcome your introducing yourself and letting us know about your future academic plans.

Application

  • Application period opens December 1, 2023 and ends January 31, 2024.
  • Online writing tutorials begin April 2024.
  • Coursework begins in Oxford July 15 and ends August 2, 2024.
