Deadline: April 2, 2024

Applications are open for the NATO Defense College (NDC) Non-resident Associate Fellowship Programme 2024. The Research Division of the NATO Defense College (NDC) is pleased to accept applications for its non-resident associate fellowship programme.

The associate fellowship is divided in two groups: junior fellows and senior fellows.

  • Junior fellows: the programme is aimed at identifying, nurturing and connecting next generation leaders and scholars through conferences, seminars and professional development activities, in-person and online.
  • Senior fellows: the programme is aimed at strengthening and complementing the capabilities of the NATO Defense College’s Research Division through publications, participation and organization of workshops, as well as lectures and mentoring.

Conditions

  • Non-resident fellows are not paid nor employed by NATO nor the NATO Defense College. However, their individual contributions are remunerated according to the NDC schedule for publication authorship. Junior fellowships are limited to 1 year but can be extended by one year. Senior fellowships are limited to 2 years and can be renewed for an additional 2 years.

Eligibility

The associate fellowship is open to nationals from NATO and NATO partner countries.

  • Junior fellowship: applicants must possess an MA degree in any discipline, have no more than five years of work experience from the date of their graduation, and have achieved outstanding results in their careers to be considered promising next generation leaders or researchers.
  • Senior fellowship: applicants must have finished their PhD at least 5 years before the year of application, have an outstanding publication list, count significant academic achievements, and considered leading scholars in their area of expertise.

General Requirements

Associate fellows, junior and seniors, will be affiliated with the Research Division of the NATO Defense College but non-residential.

  • Junior fellows will be required to participate in an annual workshop in person, and other activities like online seminars or development courses.
  • Senior fellows will be required to attend an annual workshop, publish one or two pieces with the NATO Defense College per year and, in coordination with the Head of the Research Division, help organize workshops or seminars to be held in Rome, at the NATO Defense College, and when possible lecture or mentor at the NATO Defense College. They may also be asked to participate in the peer review process for submissions under consideration for publication.

Application

Applicants are to send the following documents via email to: [email protected]

  • Junior fellows: one-page CV, one-page cover letter describing their core interests (e.g. technology, climate change, the Middle East), and either a short sample publication in the case of researchers or a description of their professional achievements (in the case of young professionals).
  • Senior fellows: one-page CV, one-page research proposal for a publication in NDC Research Division’s series (as available on the website), and one example of academic writing (possibly already published)
