Climate Tracker Scholarships to Cover the COP16 on Biodiversity 2024

Deadline: June 23, 2024

Applications are open for the Climate Tracker Scholarships to Cover the COP16 on Biodiversity 2024. Climate Tracker will support eleven journalists from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and Peru to cover in person or virtually the COP16 on Biodiversity that will take place in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024.

In alliance with FES Transformación, they have 11 scholarships available for journalists who want to be part of a training process in which they will learn about biodiversity, environmental journalism and climate change science. Among this group of selected people, they will open six places to cover COP16 in person with all expenses paid and five to do it virtually, with financial remuneration.

This summit will take place at a fundamental moment for the planet. It is the first to be carried out after the approval of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which is the main tool to fight for the protection of biodiversity. Furthermore, according to the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), we are experiencing the worst biodiversity crisis in history, with more than one million species facing extinction.

For these and other reasons, it is essential that this COP16 has broad coverage in countries such as Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and Peru.

Program Details

In-person coverage: travel to Cali to cover COP16 as a field correspondent

Climate Tracker will select six journalists who will travel with them to Cali, Colombia, to cover COP16 in person. They will cover all expenses for this group of journalists to cover (air tickets to Cali, Colombia; lodging and food during the days of the conference).

The selected people must:

  • Publish at least four journalistic contents: one before the COP, two during the conference and one after.
  • Participate in all training sessions on climate negotiations.
  • Provide updates and relevant procedural information to the team of online reporters who will also be covering COP16.

Virtual coverage: report on COP16 without leaving your country

Climate Tracker will select five journalists to cover COP 16 remotely from their countries of residence. This group will be part of the same training and mentoring process and will receive a financial stimulus for their coverage.

People selected for this modality must:

  • Publish at least three journalistic contents: one before the COP, one during the conference and one after.
  • Participate in all training sessions on climate negotiations.
  • Maintain permanent contact with the person doing the personalized mentoring.

Benefits

Through this scholarship program, if you are selected, both for virtual and in-person coverage, over three months you will benefit from the following aspects.

  • Training: you will receive training on biodiversity issues, the functioning of climate summits and environmental journalism.
  • Editorial support: you will receive support at all times from the Climate Tracker team to achieve quality products.
  • Visibility: your articles will be published on Climate Tracker channels and disseminated through its Environmental Media Network, so that your work has greater impact.

Eligibility

  • Open to journalists interested in covering COP16.
  • They should be residing in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and Peru.

Application

You must complete the form with your contact information and a proposed story (pitch) that you would like to cover during COP16.
