ETH for Development (ETH4D) Visiting Student Grant 2024 for Students from LMICs

Applications are open for the ETH for Development (ETH4D) Visiting Student Grant 2024 for Students from LMICs. Exchanging ideas and knowledge globally is key to producing world-class research and education. This fellowship aims to remove financial barriers for students from low and middle-income countries to visit ETH Zurich.

The ETH4D Visiting Student Grant provides ETH professors funding to invite a student from a low- or middle-income country to ETH Zurich for a research stay of 3-6 months. The invited student must be registered as a Masters (MA/MSc) student in their home institution. Visiting students have the opportunity to learn new methodologies, build their networks, and develop their research projects in a new academic setting.

Funding

The grant covers the following expenses up to a maximum of 16.5 kCHF:

  • Living allowance for the duration of the research stay: 2.3 kCHF per month
  • Economy roundtrip ticket to and from Switzerland (max. 2 kCHF)
  • Visa fees

The awarded grant will be transferred to the account of the ETH professor. The professor is responsible for the administration and reporting of the finances.

Eligibility

  • Eligible to invite a visiting student are ETH professors.
  • Professors can invite a doctoral student who is registered at a university or research institute in a country listed in the OECD/DAC list. 
  • Preference will be given to students from least developed, low- and lower-middle income countries.

Application

The application for the ETH4D Student Project Fellowship comprises two steps:

  • Application of the host professor to ETH4D for the fellowship using the electronic application form. The following documents are needed:
    • Project description and objectives to be achieved during the research stay including a (max 750 words). Project description should include:
      • Background and research questions
      • Main activities during the research stay
      • Expected outcomes and deliverables
      • Main anticipated learnings during the stay
    • Timeframe and work plan in the form of a Gantt chart
    • Motivation letter of the student (max. 1 page)
    • CV of the student (max. 2 pages), including publication list and two references
    • Most recent transcripts of the student
    • Support letter of the hosting ETH Zurich professor, including statement of any financial and in-kind contributions
  • Project mobility application of the student through the ETH Zurich’s Student Exchange Office to gain admission and status as a Project Mobility Student.
