Deadline: September 21, 2024

Applications are open for the SUST International Training on “Statistical Analysis of Oceanographic Data” 2024/2025. The Department of Oceanography at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is organizing an international training program on “Statistical Analysis of Oceanographic Data” in-collaboration with Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research; Marine Research, Center for Policy Research at Universiti Sains Malaysia; and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). This training is funded by POGO (Partnership for Observation of Global Ocean).

The training program will be conducted over 10 days, with five days of online sessions followed by five days of in-person sessions at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). The online sessions will include theoretical lectures and hands-on data analysis in R, while the in-person sessions will focus on practical training in ODV, QGIS, and R, utilizing real oceanographic data.

This course will encompass fundamental statistics and advanced oceanographic data analysis using R. It will also include oceanographic data visualization with ODV and other GIS software. Candidates are expected to have a basic understanding of statistics. The medium of instruction will be English, and participants are required to bring their own laptops.

Funding

  • A limited number of grants will be available for participants from developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The grants will cover international travel, accommodation, and meals. The grants will not cover expenses incurred by the fellow in their own nation (e.g., domestic travel, visa costs, personal insurance and COVID test). Participants who request partial support and contribute to their training costs from other sources will be given preference.

Eligibility

  • Open to early career scientists, technicians, postgraduate students (PhD or MSc), and post-doctoral researchers involved in relevant fields of marine science.
  • Must have basic understanding of statistics.
  • Participants need to be able to communicate in English and have a functional laptop.

Application

Upload all required documents as PDF files. You will need to upload a CV, a motivation letter explaining your interest in joining the training program, and one recommendation letter. The recommendation letter should be dated, written in English, and on institutional letterhead.

Only applications that are complete in all respects will be considered for the fellowship. The Selection Committee will consider Quality of the application, Curriculum of the applicant and Evidence that the training will lead to capacity development of the applicant to evaluate the applications.
