Deadline: November 8, 2024

Applications are open for the Shifting Democracies Reporting Fellowship 2025. Global Press’ Shifting Democracies fellows will examine changing governance structures in countries around the world, and how those shifts are interconnected. During this two-year, full-time fellowship, fellows will produce investigative and explanatory journalism, participate in advanced skills training and be part of an international cohort of women journalists, all working and living in their home countries.

Global Press was founded in 2006 and has trained more than 250 women journalists since its founding. In 2024, Global Press transformed its operating model to scale its training programs and coverage locations. Global Press now focuses its coverage on the three most pressing issues of the day — global health, civil liberties and the environment. Now, reporters and reporting fellows from even more global locations are producing investigative and explanatory news coverage for print, online and radio audiences across the globe.

Benefits

Fellows will receive:

  • Up to $30,000 USD per year based on local market rates.
  • The opportunity to opt in to a global health benefit plan.
  • Access to the robust Duty of Care program.
  • The option to apply for a technology scholarship and/or a tech repair loan.
  • 10 public holidays per year and 10 vacation days per year.
  • Wellness support and mentorship opportunities.

Eligibility

  • Identify as a woman.
  • Be from and currently live full-time in their coverage country for the duration of the 2-year fellowship.
  • Have at least five years of prior newsroom, reporting or related experience.
  • Have English language proficiency.
  • Be enthusiastic about learning new reporting and writing skills.
  • Have an understanding of civil liberties and how to cover related topics.
  • Be passionate about visual storytelling and have a desire to advance photojournalism skills.
  • Have basic technology skills and regular access to internet.

Eligible Countries

  • Women journalists in the following countries are eligible to apply: Mexico, El Salvador, Brazil, Argentina, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, India, Bangladesh, Philippines, Indonesia.

Application

All applicants will be required to submit:

  • A current, English-language resume.
  • A two-page (1,000 word) cover letter stating the gaps they see in coverage of how democracy is shifting in their country, and what role their journalism would play in filling those gaps.
  • A portfolio of three work samples with a brief explanation of an editor’s role in each.
  • Three photos they have taken either personally or professionally that demonstrate their photography experience.

Note: The use of AI in the creation of any application materials will immediately disqualify candidates.
