FutureBUILDS NEXT Fellowship Program 2025 for Emerging Black Leaders in Toronto, Canada

Applications are open for the FutureBUILDS NEXT Fellowship Program 2025. FutureBUILDS NEXT is a free Fellowship for Emerging Black Leaders in Non-Profit Housing funded by the Government of Canada’s Future Skills Centre and developed by Monumental.

In 2025, the program will focus on enhancing the leadership skills and growing the talent pool of early career Black leaders who are passionate about affordable housing and community development and are interested in taking on future leadership roles in Toronto’s non-profit housing sector. 

Benefits

Running throughout June and July, this 2 month-intensive program will provide participants with:

  • Access to a network of like-minded peers, established leaders and professionals advancing innovative and impactful non-profit housing initiatives.
  • A full day, immersive off-site retreat, where you’ll begin to build life-long connections.
  • 10 weeks of interactive, structured learning with guest speakers and panels discussions unpacking practices and strategies to get non-profit housing built (Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 pm).
  • An exciting travel-based learning trip within North America to learn from experts and leaders in the Black housing space (during the week of July 7th, 2025)
    • Costs for airfare, accommodation and meals will be covered by the FutureBUILDS NEXT fellowship.
  • Access to FutureBUILDS’ inaugural national conference in September 2025

Eligibility

  • Applicants identify as Black 
  • Applicants are between the ages of 18 to 32
  • Applicants have demonstrated leadership experience in Toronto’s diverse Black communities
  • Applicants can identify how a deeper understanding of the non-profit housing sector will benefit their career journey and work within Black communities
  • Applicants are willing to commit to a minimum of 2.5 hours a week to expand their knowledge of non-profit housing and development. This includes:
    • 10 weeks of structured programming, 2.5 hours per week throughout June and July 2025, with the exception of a retreat, a travel-based learning trip and community dinner.
      • Program Kick-Off Retreat: All day, Sunday, June 1st, 2025
      • Travel-based Learning Trip: Multi-day, Week of July 7th to 11th, 2025 (to be refined)
      • Community Dinner: Evening, Thursday, July 31st, 2025
  • Applicants can provide one (1) letter of recommendation, written and signed by an existing leader that speaks to your suitability for this program.
