Deadline: March 13, 2018

IREX is accepting applications for the 2018–2019 Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program. The Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program (Fulbright TGC) is a year-long professional development opportunity for elementary, middle, and high school teachers to develop skills for preparing students for a competitive global economy. Fulbright TGC equips teachers to bring an international perspective to their schools through targeted training, experience abroad, and global collaboration.

The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is administered by IREX. The program aims to:

  • Enhance teachers’ expertise in adapting teaching methods, lesson planning, and instructional technology to internationalize the U.S. classroom.
  • Support U.S. teachers to develop the leadership and professional skills to ensure that their students are knowledgeable about the world and prepared for careers in an increasingly competitive global economy.
  • Prepare U.S. students to work and collaborate in multiple cultural contexts and to be more aware of other countries around the world through interaction with teachers and students globally.
  • Develop mutual understanding and lasting relationships by sharing best educational practices between teachers and students in the U.S. and abroad.

Activities

  • Global education online course: Fulbright TGC fellows complete a rigorous, semester-long online course focused on best practices in global education.
  • Global symposium: Fulbright TGC fellows gather in Washington, DC, for an in-person professional development workshop to build networks, collaborate, and develop strategies to enhance world learning.
  • International field experience: Fulbright TGC fellows travel abroad for two to three weeks to experience another country’s culture and education system and promote mutual understanding.
  • Capstone project: Fulbright TGC fellows create a global education guide that serves as a resource for their local community to build global awareness and mutual understanding.
  • Alumni support: Fulbright TGC alumni may apply for grants and participate in global education networks to enhance and sustain their engagement.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Have earned a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience;
  • Have five or more years of teaching experience, or of working directly with students in another educational capacity (such as library media specialist or a blended instructional role);
  • Be a citizen of and resident in the United States*;
  • Be employed full time as a teacher at a U.S. public, private, or charter school;
  • Demonstrates commitment to teaching or working in their field after completion of the program;
  • Have submitted a complete application.

The Fulbright TGC Program promotes diversity in the classroom and in learning. Fulbright TGC supports inclusion and strongly encourages teachers with disabilities to apply.

Alumni of the Teachers for Global Classrooms (TGC) programs are ineligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who have not participated in the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching (DA), the Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange or another Fulbright program.

*U.S. teachers at Department of Defense schools and teachers from US territories are also eligible to apply.
