Vodafone appStar Challenge 2014 – Ghana, Indian, Kenya and South Africa

Vodafone is currently accepting entries for its appStar challenge. appStar is the Annual Developer Contest conducted by Vodafone, for developers across several countries of African & Asian continent, to promote local talent & bring them to the international stage.Targeted platforms includes: Android, J2ME, Windows Phone 8, iOS & BlackBerry Entries would be judged based on the following criteria: quality, innovation, local relevance, international applicability.

There would be  2 rounds of this challenge.

  •  Round one (or National contest), all developers of a particular country will compete against each other. The national contest has different categories.
  •  In Round two (or International contest), the best two developers of each country (one established developer & one upcoming developer)would compete against developers from other countries, where they would get the opportunity to showcase their app live to a large audience

Note: 

An ‘established’ developer/company is one that satisfies ANY ONE of the following criteria: 10+ employees, established more than 24 months before 15 Jan 2015; Has 50,000+ downloads of all their apps put together in popular apps stores.

An ‘upcoming’ developer/company is one that does not satisfy ANY of the criteria listed above for ‘established’ developer

In all cases, decision of Vodafone Group Company / Partner is final on who is an established / upcoming developer

Deadlines based on Locations

Ghana: October 31, 2014
India: November 30, 2014
Kenya: TBA
South Africa:November 15, 2014

International contest begins January 14, 2015

Eligibility

  • Citizens of Ghana, India, Kenya or South Africa

Prizes

A.National Category

  • Ghana: First Prizes for Best established company apps & Best start up apps wins GHS 10, 000 + All expense paid trip to India
  •  South Africa: First Prizes for  Best developed application and Best start-up developed application wins R 20,000
  • India: The following categories are awarded INR 50,000 (1) Best Game (2) Best Utility/Productivity (3) Best Health App (4) Best Education App (5)Best App “for Good”(6)Best use of Location API (7)Best App using Payment APIs (8)Best Overall App using Vodafone APIs

B. International Category

  • First Prize for established developer & upcoming developer: Trip to MWC Barcelona for each winner
  • Second Prize for established developer & upcoming developer: Devices and Amazon Voucher worth $5,000
