Deadline: May 17, 2015 and May 12, 2015

The UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) is searching for a dynamic young speaker to address the opening ceremony of the UN General Assembly Session on Climate Change 2015. In addition, two other candidates are invited to participate in panel discussions during the meeting. Are you or do you know a young person from a developing country with an inspiring story about climate action? If so, the United Nations wants to hear from you.

A global search is underway for this dynamic person and two others from civil society organizations to address a special United Nations High-Level Event on Climate Change, set for 29 June, and convened by the President of the General Assembly, Sam Kutesa.

The event, which will be attended by Ministers, business leaders and representatives from civil society organizations will take place just months before countries meet in Paris in December 2015 to adopt a new universal agreement on climate change. The event will be the highpoint of a week of climate change activities at UN Headquarters in New York.

Eligibility

UN-NGLS invites candidates who are representatives of civil society organizations to share their story of successful local climate action to help shift the world to a sustainable path, enabling economic opportunity, equality, and a healthy environment for all. Civil society representatives may also apply to serve on the Selection Committee for this event.

Candidates are eligible if they:

  •  are a representative of a civil society organization, and officially authorized by their organization/network to speak on the organization/network’s behalf;
  • can address the relevant topics and guiding questions in the event concept note (link above);
  • would be a compelling public speaker;
  • are available to be in New York on 28-29 June 2015 and for travel if necessary;
  • have a visa for travel to New York, or are able to obtain one within 2 weeks for travel to New York.

One speaker for the Opening Ceremony

  • The President of the General Assembly requests young candidates from developing countries for this key speaking role. This is an opportunity to tell Member States, Government Ministers, high-level participants and other representatives about how you are succeeding in taking climate action.
  • Travel funding will be provided for this speaker and a supporter if the candidate is under 18.

One respondent for Panel Discussion 1: Mobilizing political momentum for ambitious actions on mitigation, adaptation and means of implementation

  • Applicants must be representatives of civil society organizations with expertise in this topic.
  • Travel funding is not available for this speaking role.

One respondent for Panel Discussion 2: Mobilizing stakeholders for ambitious actions on mitigation, adaptation and means of implementation

Apply to be on the civil society Selection Committee: A Selection Committee of diverse representatives from civil society organizations will choose five candidates to present to the Office of the President of the General Assembly for each speaking role as a short-list for their consideration. The Committee will ensure regional and gender balance, and diversity of age and expertise in the overall set of candidates. The President of the General Assembly will make the final selection of the civil society speakers for this event. For this application, the deadline is May 12, 2015.
