Deadline: September 30, 2016

Did you know that food security is one of the biggest issues related to climate change? The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations wants to see your ideas, thoughts and actions! Produce a video no longer than 1 minute and tell them about the issue, or even better, present a solution on how to feed our growing population in a changing climate. You don’t need any professional equipment – videos can be shot on your smartphone or tablet.

Upload your video to YouTube adding the hashtag #WFD2016VideoContest to the title and don’t forget to also fill out the form provided to be in with a chance to win. Two winners will be selected, one by a jury and the other based on the number of views or likes on YouTube.

Prizes

  • The winning videos will be announced on October 14, 2016, the official celebration of World Food Day in Rome, on the World Food Day website, FAO social media channels, and promoted by FAO partners and the media;
  • The shortlisted videos will feature in an exhibit at FAO headquarters held during World Food Week (October 10-14,  2016). They may also be distributed to media and published on a variety of web and social media platforms;
  • A Certificate of Recognition, and a surprise gift bag will also be sent to the winners;
  • In the event that any of the selected winner(s) of any prize is/are ineligible in accordance with these Contest rules and/or the General Rules, Copyright and Privacy, cannot be traced, or refuses the prize, the prize will be forfeited and it will be in the sole discretion of the Jury to choose whether to award the prize to another eligible entry;
  • When the winning videos are published, the name of the producer, as it appears on YouTube, and country of origin will be stated. No other personal information about the Contestants will be published or shared.

Eligibility

  • Open to children and youth between the ages of 13 to 19, living anywhere in the world;
  • The age to declare is the one at the time of entering the Contest. Minors must have the permission of their parents or legal guardians to participate in the Contest.

Selection Criteria

  • Two winners will be selected among the shortlisted Entrants, one based on the number of times a video is viewed or liked on YouTube, and the second determined by a jury, who will base this decision on relevance to the World Food Day theme, aesthetic and technical excellence, subject and story-telling capacity;

Application Process

  • Participants must submit their own video entries via their personal YouTube accounts, including the hashtag #WFD2016VideoContest in the title, but their entry will only be considered eligible when they submit the link through a form on the World Food Day Video Contest website, including only the details requested. No file transfers will be accepted;
  • The length of the video should not exceed 1 minute;
  • Each video submitted must reflect the theme for World Food Day 2016: ‘Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.’ Entries that are not relevant to the theme for World Food Day 2016 will not be considered;
  • The video can be produced with any professional or non professional device (smartphone, tablet, video camera);
  • The text used to describe video should include the following information (a title screen can also be used):
    • The hashtag #WFD2016VideoContest
    • Name of participant/Principal producer’s name
    • Title of video and date it was produced
    • Country and area or region where the video was made
    • Brief description of the video and how it connects to the World Food Day theme
    • Any audio or video footage credits
  • Text can only be in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Italian.
  • The following languages are permitted: English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Italian. If a language other than those here specified is spoken in the video, it should be translated. Translating it as a voice over or in form of subtitles (if technically feasible) is highly recommended. Specific meanings of words and sentences of local languages/dialects, or slang, should be explained in any of the seven languages specified. Subtitles, if used, should be placed within the lower third of the picture (video frame) and in white color over a black bar;
  • The image quality must be in High Definition (HD) or in Standard Definition (SD). Both are common image quality standards, which are usually provided in cameras and smartphones after the year 2000;
  • The video must be the original work of the participant. Any material under copyright (footage, still photography, music, text, audio) should not be used without prior permission of the copyright holder;
  • The video can explore the theme from any perspective and any “genre” (documentary, video art, narrative or cinematographic video). It can have audio or be silent;
  • Videos must have been taken within twelve months of the date of entry;
  • Video should not have received previous awards and must not be in use by any other organization.
