Deadline: August 8, 2017

International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is now accepting applications for the Douglas Tweedale Memorial Fellowship. The Fellowship helps Latin American journalists improve their investigative reporting skills, either generally, or in a specialty reporting area such as immigration, environment, science and technology or business, through a three-week long program in the United States.

The fellowship program will begin with a three-day orientation and professional program for the participants in Washington, D.C., which will include appointments with area investigative journalists and media outlets. The agenda in Washington will focus on investigative journalism broadly, taking into consideration the participants’ interests and areas of focus. The journalists then will depart for a two-week assignment in the newsroom of an English-language media organization in the United States, where they will conduct reporting in a specialty area or on a specific project they have proposed in their application.

Program Dates

  • Program Orientation: October 25 – 27, 2017
  • Program Attachment: October 30 – November 10, 2017

Eligibility

The International Center for Journalists will offer the fellowship to two journalists from Latin America to enhance and polish their skills in the United States in the fall of 2017. To be considered, candidates should:

  • Be early- to mid-career journalists working at independent news organizations, including print, radio, television or online media in Latin America who have an interest in honing their investigative reporting skills;
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in journalism, journalism in a democratic society;
  • Have a desire to develop strong professional skills;
  • Outline their interest in investigative reporting and/or any specialized, topical area of reporting that they wish to strengthen — such as business, environmental, health and science;
  • Outline what technical skills they want to improve, if any — such as data visualization or customizing content for smart phones;
  • Propose a project that they wish to develop during the program. This might or might not include a reporting project.
  • Applicants must demonstrate enough proficiency in the English language to function and work in an English language environment.
