Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists at the University of Michigan 2018/19 (Fully-funded)

Deadline: December 1, 2017 (International Applicants) / February 1, 2018 (US Applicants)

Call for application is ongoing for the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists at the University of Michigan. The Knight-Wallace Fellowship recognizes exceptional journalists for their work, leadership and potential with a unique opportunity: an academic year of study, developing new perspectives and networks, and achieving both professional and personal growth at the University of Michigan, one of the world’s finest universities. For the small group of journalism professionals from the U.S. and abroad selected for a Knight-Wallace Fellowship, the result is a life-changing experience.

At the center of the Knight-Wallace Fellowship experience is a focused study plan that takes advantage of all the resources available at the University of Michigan, one of the world’s best institutions of higher learning. Each fellow is assigned an academic advisor, carefully selected to best match his or her area of interest. Together, you and your advisor design a personalized study plan that may involve a combination of classes, individual study and informal seminars. And while you’ll be urged to take classes that fuel your intended study topic, they also strongly encourage you to try things you’ve only dreamed of.

Benefits

  • All tuition and course fees at the University of Michigan are paid for by the fellowship. Spouses and partners are invited to partake in university courses as well;
  • In addition, all fellowship trips – domestic and international – are covered. If the fellow’s employer does not contribute to insurance coverage, health insurance is provided to fellows and their family members who join them in Ann Arbor;
  • Personalized study plans and access to U-M courses allow you to pursue your own path;
  • Regular seminars and visiting speakers bring the best from journalism and academia to you;
  • Workshops for fellows provide opportunities to advance your writing, entrepreneurial and multimedia knowledge and skills;
  • Stipends allow fellows (and their families/partners) to make the most of a once-in-a-lifetime sabbatical opportunity. U.S. fellows receive $70,000 – distributed as $8,750 monthly – from September through April. Stipend details vary for international fellows and are worked out on an individual basis.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be full-time journalists, with a minimum five years professional experience, whose work appears regularly as an employee or freelancer;
  • Print/digital, broadcast, photo, documentary and graphic/visualization journalists are eligible to apply;
  • There are no academic prerequisites.

Selection

  • Fellows are selected on the basis of past performance, future promise and, above all, leadership in some aspect of journalism. Great care goes into assembling classes of fellows that mix the type and size of news organizations as well as geography and background. Typically, 12 Americans are joined by six international colleagues.
  • Selection is determined by a committee of distinguished journalists and University of Michigan faculty. U.S. finalists are interviewed at Wallace House in April and announced in early May.
