The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) invites applications for the Mariam K. Chamberlain Fellowship in Women and Public Policy. The IWPR, located in Washington, D.C., conducts and communicates research to inspire public dialogue, shape policy, and improve the lives and opportunities of women of diverse backgrounds, circumstances, and experiences.
In honor of pioneering feminist economist Mariam K. Chamberlain (MKC), IWPR offers a fellowship in public policy to a promising scholar each year. The Mariam K. Chamberlain Fellow contributes to a variety of research projects to inform policies affecting women.
Research areas for 2018-2019
- The quality of women’s jobs, including wages, paid sick leave, paid family leave, and workplace flexibility.
- Increasing access to higher education and non-traditional jobs for low-income women and women with children.
- The impact of new technology on the changing nature of work and its gender composition.
- The economic status of women and girls, women of color, and immigrant women across the United States.
Responsibilities
- Reviewing and compiling literature and information.
- Collecting, checking, and analyzing data
- Preparing reports and report graphics.
- Fact checking and editing.
- Attending relevant Congressional briefings, policy seminars, and meetings.
- Fellows are responsible for a certain amount of general office work, including tasks such as responding to information requests, photocopying, assisting in maintaining the library and research files, and answering telephones.
Benefits
- Compensation for the fellowship is $33,300 before taxes and deductions over the 9-month period.
- The fellowship offers health insurance benefits, accrued sick leave and vacation, paid holidays, and a public transportation stipend.
- The position is full-time and generally spans the academic year (September–May), though starting and ending dates are somewhat flexible.
Eligibility
- Applicants should have at least a bachelor’s degree, preferably in a social science discipline (such as sociology, psychology, education, or public policy), statistics, economics, mathematics or women’s studies.
- Graduate work is not required.
- Interest in and familiarity with an intersectional approach to women’s issues.
- Applicants should have strong quantitative and library research skills and knowledge of women’s issues.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word required, Excel is a plus.
- Knowledge of STATA, SPSS, SAS, or graphics software a plus.
- Qualitative and or survey research experience also a plus.
