World Earth Day #Write4Climate Essay Competition 2018

To commemorate the 2018 World Earth Day – End Plastic Pollution, entries are now open for the’Write 4 Climate’ Essay Competition for environmental enthusiasts. This contest is a joint initiative of Glow Initiative for Economic Empowerment, Enercate Initiative and Climate Smart Nigeria. They invite you to submit an essay of no more than 500 words on the title ‘ The Plastic Menace; Leading the Change’.

The emergence of several landfills and ditches have increased over the years. Plastic pollution has become an immense environmental threat. The streets are littered with plastic dirt and water channels are blocked leading to flooding. All of these and more have contributed significantly to environmental degradation and more dangerously, Climate Change. How can you LEAD the change?

The writers/applicants will take the YALI course on Understanding Climate Change or Understanding Renewable Energy as part of qualification to participate and upload their certificates in the application. The winner will commit to carry out the project they’ve highlighted in their essay or organize a small project geared towards ending plastic pollution and/or use the book to educate students and sharing pictures with the team.

This essay writing process will stimulate thought and action amongst the next generation of leaders to provide solutions for plastic pollution. In seeking solutions for how s/he will lead change (title of Essay), they automatically come up with solutions for fighting the climate menace.

The process will allow them understand that the answer lies with them to create the change and not in the hands of the government or any other entity. The YALI courses which they will undertake to qualify as a participants will help them comprehend the full concept of Climate Change and the intervention of Renewable Energy and further enlarge their minds to possibilities in the value chains of recycling and other related fields.

All Essays will be Published on their websites: www.enercate.org and www.glowinitiative.org with full credit given to the authors. All participants automatically join the Climate Ambassadors Network and the Enercate Network to access further opportunities and trainings.

Eligibility

  • Participants must be between the ages of 16 – 35.
  • Participants must be resident in Africa.
  • Be committed to environmental Sustainability.
  • Take the 15 minute YALI online course on Climate Change and Renewable Energy and upload certificate.

Requirements

  • This competition is driven by an interest in creating awareness about environmental sustainability and as such knowledge transfer and action is key.
  • The winner will commit to carry out the project they’ve highlighted in their essay (where applicable) or organize a small project geared towards ending plastic pollution and/or use the book to educate students and share a report with the team.

Application

  • 22nd April – Application opens
  • 21st May – Deadline for essay submission
  • 1st June – Winner announced
  • 4th June – Winner receives prizes, begins mentorship programme and begin mini project
  • 10th June – All participants Join the Climate Ambassadors network and Enercate Network and have their essays published
  • 1st July – Winner completes mini project and shares report with team
