Applications are open for the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Sub-Saharan Africa Programme 2019. This programme identifies and rewards talented young female scientists in the field of Formal sciences, Life sciences, Environmental sciences, Physical sciences, Engineering and Technological sciences.

Founded in 1998, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science partnership was created to recognize and promote women in science. Its programs reward established women scientists whose outstanding achievements have contributed to the advancement of scientific knowledge and of its benefits to society and provide support to promising young women who are already making significant contributions in their scientific disciplines.

Fellowship

  • Up to €10,000 is awarded for doctorates and up to €15,000 for post-doctorates

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following general criteria:

For doctoral researchers

  • Having the nationality of one of the 48 Sub-Saharan African countries covered by the programme
  • Enrolled in a Sub-Saharan African studies Institute and pursuing studies leading to a PhD. degree in one of the scientific fields
  • Completing their doctorate in a research Laboratory or Institution in one of the 48 countries covered by the programme
  • Who started their thesis no later than December 31, 2017.

For Post-doctoral researchers

  • Having the nationality of one of the 48 Sub-Saharan African countries covered by the programme
  • Having obtained a PhD. degree in one of the scientific fields
  • Completing their post-doctorate in a research Laboratory or Institution in one of the 48 countries covered by the programme
  • Conducting research in one of the scientific fields
  • Who do not have a permanent position prior to the award ceremony, to be held in November 2019
  • Who defended their thesis after February 25, 2014. If the post-doctoral researcher has one or more children, this deadline is brought forward by one year per child
  • Who started their post-doctoral research before February 25, 2019, when the call for applications was issued

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria of the candidate by the jury are the following:

  • The candidate’s outstanding academic records (including number, quality and impact of the publications, conference presentations, patents…)
  • The scientific quality of the research project
  • The innovative nature and productivity of the research and its potential application in science
  • The ability of the candidate to communicate and promote sciences to a younger audience and to encourage young African female scientists
  • The candidate’s career-path

Application

An application is considered complete only if it includes all documents below:

  • Certified copies of the degrees or recent diplomas
  • A proof of having obtained a PhD. degree for postdoctoral candidates
  • A proof of being enrolled in a Sub-Saharan African doctoral studies for doctoral candidates
  • A detailed project of maximum 2 pages, including:
    • The project description of current research project
    • The proposed use of the grant motivating the candidature with some budget indications. Provide insight into what the grant will be used for (e.g. conferences, travel or equipment).
  • Letters of recommendation from the research supervisor and/or the director of the scientific institution where the research project is carried or the Dean of the University under which the candidate is running her research
  • The list of publications and patents Incomplete files or received after the deadline for application, as well as candidatures that do not meet the requirements mentioned above, will not be taken into consideration.
