Applications are open for the Pacific Fisheries Leadership Programme (PFLP) 2020. The PFLP offers a unique customised programme for current and emerging Pacific fisheries leaders to develop additional skills relevant to mobilizing change on national and regional fisheries priorities.
It is envisaged 125 participants, will enjoy learning through workshops, workplace experiences, coaching and resources relevant and applicable to their daily work. It will take around 24 months to complete the full programme.
Selected participants will engage in a modular online programme including Leadership for Effectiveness; Leadership Experience; Leadership for Change; and Coaching Support. The Leadership for Effectiveness component contains two areas of coursework; Leading and Managing People and Inclusive Strategic Leadership. The coursework includes activities that can be counted for assessment.
Expected long term outcomes for the fisheries sector includes improved quality and diversity of leadership and management in priority sectoral areas and increased cooperation between relevant participants and their institutions. These objectives conform to progressing implementation of the “Regional Roadmap for Sustainable Pacific Fisheries.”
This programme is a significant investment by New Zealand and by the members of the consortium. As such, PFLP wants to attract not only the most relevant, but the most committed and interested participants possible.
Program Components
Selected participants will engage in a modular online programme including:
- Leadership for Effectiveness, participants will be given the opportunity to gain accreditation in two award courses delivered by UQ. The 3 weeks course were conducted and delivered in Fiji in 2019 and 2020 for two cohorts. From July 2020, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, it is envisaged that the next three cohorts of Leadership for Effectiveness will be delivered virtually. It will include two online coursework and facilitated workshops over a 8-week period each, focusing on Leading and Managing People, and Inclusive Strategic Leadership, and an option to get one or two course credits towards selected University of Queensland (UQ) Business School postgraduate programs, all items of assessment for each area of coursework must be satisfactorily completed.
- Leadership for Change, demonstrated capacity to lead a significant initiative, change or reform. This course consist of two modules and is delivered by consortium partner CLA. The course has been delivered face-to-face for one cohort in 2019. From July 2020, due to travel restrictions with COVID-19, it is envisaged that further cohorts of Leadership for Change will be delivered virtually; including two 8-week online coursework and facilitated workshops.
- Leadership Experience – student placement opportunities in areas and which are relevant to practical leadership challenges faced by the participants which will also provide opportunities to observe different leadership styles. Participants who participate in the student placement opportunities will not be paid during such student placement;
- Coaching – individualized to support each participant with leadership challenges they face.
Eligibility
The programme is targeted at current and emerging offshore and coastal fisheries leaders who are current senior managers or upcoming middle level managers of national fisheries administration/authority or a Pacific Fisheries regional agency or NGO.
You are if you meet the following programme criteria:
- You are a current senior manager or upcoming middle level manager within SPC Member States national fisheries administration/authority or a Pacific fisheries regional agency or NGO.
- Participants should have sufficiently fluent English to read, write and converse at post-graduate level.
- You have a minimum education of a two-year diploma or equivalent.
- You have been employed in the fisheries (or relevant) sector in a senior or middle management level.
- You have the support of your Fisheries Director, Permanent Secretary, Minister or Secretary/Director Foreign Affairs.
- You are able to demonstrate through your application how you expect PFLP will assist you to be more effective in your responsibilities and in leading change relevant to national fisheries priorities.
- To join the cohort 3 of Leadership for Effectiveness, you must be available to attend the two eight-week period online coursework and facilitated workshops scheduled to commence in the week beginning 14 September 2020, and commit to completing workplace projects, online learning and coaching for a period of six months or more following the workshop.
