Deadline: January 31, 2021
Applications are open for the Tableau Foundation/Equal Measures 2030 (EM2030) Fellowship 2021. The Fellowship cohort will consist of up to 15 data journalists who demonstrate an interest in learning Tableau skills and a passion for data-driven journalism about gender quality issues linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Fellows, in turn, are expected to apply their data skills and the EM2030 SDG Gender Index data to develop pieces of data-driven journalism (such as articles, infographics, apps, etc.) about key gender equality issues relevant to their country context.
Fellowship Components
Over the course of 8-10 months, the program will include:
- A Tableau Creator license: Each Fellow will receive a Creator license valid for two years.
- Three (3) X two-day virtual/in-person (depending on local travel restrictions) Tableau trainings: Fellows will receive trainings as a cohort. Trainings include Tableau Desktop I, Tableau Desktop II, and Data Storytelling.
- Five (5) two-hour virtual meetings with the other Fellows (convened by EM2030): Each virtual meeting will give Fellows an opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences and to seek help with their own data visualization and analysis questions.
- One (1) final presentation: one final virtual meeting where Fellows will present their products to the other Fellows and stakeholders from EM2030 and Tableau.
- Tableau mentorship: The Tableau Foundation will pair each fellow with a technical Tableau mentor to support the Fellow with personalized, one-on-one technical guidance.
- EM2030 focal point: EM2030 will pair each Fellow with an EM2030 focal point for support such as questions about the SDG Gender Index, other data technical questions, advocacy and/or communications support.
- Connection with local advocates: Fellows will have the opportunity to meet local advocates (EM2030 national partners) at least twice during the project, for example for help identifying issues for investigation or to provide further context and lived experience related to the issues raised in the data.
- $1,500 cash stipend: The stipend will come in the form of an unrestricted grant and will be disbursed in part up front and in part after the final presentation.
- The potential for additional presentations in national/regional/global conferences (to be confirmed, depending on themes covered, products produced, travel restrictions linked to international conferences, etc.)
Eligibility
- Applicants must be residents of India or Kenya;
- Applicants should be familiar with the tools of data journalism. In particular, they should know how to use advanced spreadsheet functionalities such as pivot tables, filters and vertical lookups;
- Be keen to learn how to use Tableau data visualisation software;
- Applicants should have an example of at least one story they’ve previously published using data journalism techniques in the news media;
- Applicants should self-identify as women or a minority gender;
- Program activities will be conducted in English, and all participants will need fluency in spoken and written English to participate effectively in the program activities;
- Data Fellows can, of course, create their data products in any language but they will be expected to be able to share and explain their products in English so the rest of the group can understand and learn from what they’ve created.
Expectations of Fellows
- Produce a great data-driven project before December 2021 (expected work volume: >80 hours) and report on progress regularly to your Tableau mentor and your EM2030 focal point.
- The projects should incorporate your Tableau skills and the EM2030 Index data in some way and should showcase your data journalism skills and be highly visible in your country.
- They can be a series of articles on a given topic, an interactive app, a news game, a data-driven investigation, or another journalistic product that we haven’t thought of!
- Publish your project with a local media organization.
- Attend the three training sessions, virtual convening with other Fellows, at least two meeting with EM2030 national partners in India or Kenya (as relevant), regular dialogues with your Tableau mentor and EM2030 focal point, and the final presentation.
- Participate in conference panels or other events, if relevant opportunities arise
- Communicate about your participation in the program (for e.g. through blog posts or sharing on social media).
- Work in a positive and respectful way with other participants.
- Complete a program evaluation questionnaire and short interview at the end, to support our learning for future programs.
Application
- The application is very brief and will ask multiple choice questions or require very short answers about your motivation for applying, your data experience, your early thinking about the gender equality issues you might want to explore and the journalism products you might want to create through this Fellowship, and your reflections after briefly exploring EM2030 data for your country.
- You will also be asked to upload or provide a link to a previous example of your data-driven journalism work.
