Six Tips to Help You Write Better Essays in College

When you’re in college, essay writing can seem like an insurmountable task, especially if it’s your first time being on your own and completing assignments independently. These six tips can help you make the most of your college experience by making sure you’re writing the best essays possible.

  • Take it slow

The first rule of writing an essay is taking it slow. Take a deep breath and then another, allowing yourself ample time for editing and proofreading your work. When you’re ready to begin writing your essay, outline all key points that should be included in your paper. Then you can proceed with building those points into body paragraphs; keep each paragraph relatively short. And if you need extra help, consider contacting a paper helper.  Many students turn to online paper helpers when they feel overwhelmed by their assignments. These experts can take care of even the most challenging assignments on any topic—and they will never ask you to pay more than what you were quoted upfront.

  • Use examples

Have you ever been confused by a new concept, but heard a fellow student explain it with ease? That’s because they used examples. Nothing helps illustrate a point like giving an example; doing so will make your essay more memorable and easier for your reader to understand. Don’t worry if you don’t have an encyclopedia of great examples at your fingertips, though; we live in an age of information where anything you need can be found on Google or YouTube. So when you’re writing an essay, look up some relevant examples and cite them appropriately or get help.

  • Keep it simple

The best approach to essay writing is less is more. Don’t try to be fancy or use high-level vocabulary. Keeping your essay simple and straightforward helps you convey your point effectively and leaves room for a reader to come away with their own interpretation of your topic. And, really, isn’t that what writing is all about? Getting people to think about what you have written, even if it means they don’t agree with everything you said?

  • Stay organized

Writing an essay is more difficult than you might think—especially when you have multiple assignments, midterms, and finals. The best way to stay organized while writing papers is to start early. Plan out your paper; if possible, write a rough draft beforehand. This will give you enough time to re-read and refine your paper before submitting it. In addition, make sure that you’re taking good notes during class. Taking good notes means that you won’t have to spend as much time researching and learning about your topic once it comes time to write. Finally, consider hiring a paper helper for any papers that are due on short notice or for papers with complex formatting requirements (such as APA or MLA). Hiring someone who knows how to format papers properly can save you tons of time!

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you find yourself staring at a blank page, paralyzed by fear that your words won’t be good enough, try not to think of it as a failure. Instead, see it as an opportunity to ask for help. No one writes a paper alone. Even if you don’t have an assigned writing partner or study group, there are plenty of resources available on campus and online that can help you get started—and finish—your paper. Don’t know where to start? Ask your professor! They are often more than happy to point students in the right direction and recommend some great online tools.

  • Have someone proofread your work

If you’re worried about your writing skills, ask a trusted family member or friend to proofread your work before you turn it in. This can give you some reassurance that everything is where it should be and that there are no major mistakes. Plus, having someone else take a look at your essay will give you a fresh perspective and make sure they catch any grammatical errors that might have slipped by during editing.

About the Author:

Patrick Green is a die-hard workaholic. Last semester, he has done more than fifty essays, a dozen term papers, and two Master’s level dissertations. Unfortunately, Patrick doesn’t know how to write bad essays. So it’s either a good essay, great, or excellent. With Mr. Green working on your order, it’s safe to say that there’s nothing to worry about because work will be done well in time!
