Arab & Middle Eastern Journalists Association (AMEJA) Awards 2023

Applications are open for the Arab & Middle Eastern Journalists Association (AMEJA) Awards 2023. A jury of industry peers will recognize the best reportage of the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region and the heritage communities in North America. Members will also vote on the best work of one of their own in the AMEJA community. 

These are the three categories:

  • Best coverage of the MENA region.
  • Best coverage of heritage communities in North America.
  • Walid El-Gabry Memorial Award recognizing the work of an AMEJA member.

AMEJA Principles & Mission

AMEJA is dedicated to the following principles and mission:

  • Providing a forum that allows members to network and discuss professional issues in an open, non-discriminatory environment free from fears of professional, political, social, or personal recrimination.
  • Increasing the representation of journalists of Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African heritage in newsrooms and other media outlets.
  • Publicizing opportunities for career advancement among members.
  • Promoting and facilitating accurate and nuanced media coverage of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), its peoples in the region, and in their heritage communities in North America and other parts of the world.
  • Advocating the inclusion of MENA perspectives that are often lacking in mainstream media outlets.
  • Facilitating contact between journalists and sources based in the Middle East and North Africa.
  • Advocating for the safety and security of journalists around the world to work without harassment or fear of harassment or persecution.
  • Promoting principles of non-discrimination on the basis of gender, race, color, religion, sexuality, or difference.
  • Encouraging youth of Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African heritage to pursue careers in journalism.
  • Supporting and uplifting members of these communities and understanding the unique challenges they face.

Award

  • Each winner will receive $500 and a hand-crafted award during a ceremony on the campus of New York University on November 9, 2023.

Eligibility

  • They welcome all manner of reports – print, digital, audio-visual.
  • Submissions must be in English.
  • Each entry must have been published or broadcast between August 1, 2022 – August 1, 2023. 

Application

The deadline for receiving applications is August 1, 2023 at midnight EST. Winners will be announced in the fall.
