Are you passionate about finding solutions to the climate emergency? Do you have innovative ideas for how the world can move away from fossil fuels while ensuring economic and climate justice? Then the Cap and Share Policy Competition 2024 is for you!

They invite Young Changemakers – activists, academics, policy professionals, and climate advocates from across the globe to submit their best policy ideas for implementing Cap and Share – a transformative climate finance and mitigation system designed to end fossil fuel extraction while redistributing wealth to communities most impacted by the climate crisis.

Benefits

  • The top entry will receive full funding to attend COP30 in Belém, including return flights, accommodation, and daily expenses.
  • Additional benefits include:
    • The top Entries will get the opportunity to to take their research forward and publish their work with Equal Right and the Cap and Share Climate Alliance (CASCA).
    • Opportunities to Present your ideas to influential leaders in the climate policy arena.
    • Expert insights and feedback from senior climate experts to further refine and develop your work.

Eligibility

  • They welcome participants from all backgrounds and regions across the globe. However, this competition is only open to individuals (no applications from teams or organisations).
  • You must be 35 years or younger as of December 1, 2024.
  • If you have a Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn account, ensure you have followed Equal Right.
  • All submissions should be in English Language only.
  • Sign the Cap and Share Supporter’s Pledge to demonstrate your support for these ideas!

Submission Categories

Participants have to select a submission category for their policy brief paper:

  • Asia Pacific
  • Africa + Middle East
  • Latin America (LATAM)
  • “My Submission is not region specific” option is also available for industry-specific proposals or policy components.

(Note: This does not need to be your current residence, but rather your region of interest)

Application

They are looking for:

A 2 page policy brief outlining a creative and practical implementation of the Cap and Share model, tailored for a specific region, country or industry. Submissions can include but are not limited to:

  • A bilateral or plurilateral Cap and Share agreement among countries in the Global North and Global South (In our discussion paper we have modelled Denmark and Costa Rica, and would encourage applicants to choose two or more other countries).
  • A sector-specific Cap and Share strategy (e.g., for the shipping or aviation industry).
  • A regional Cap and Share model for Asia Pacific, Africa & MENA, or LATAM.
  • They also welcome creative approach for policy development of component parts of the Cap and Share model, such as Governance structures for a people-owned Global Commons Fund, granting of extractive licences, distribution methods for a global cash dividend payment, mechanisms for determining a fair share of the per capita global carbon budget, and how to recognise shared but differentiated responsibilities in implementing Cap and Share in specific regions.

The deadline to apply for this opportunity is December 1, 5pm UTC.
