Deadline: April 18, 2025

Applications are open for the Wangari Maathai Fellowship 2025. The Climate Hub Tanzania with generous support from Climate-KIC is excited to announce the launch of the Wangari Maathai Fellowship, a transformative initiative aimed at empowering young leaders passionate about environmental sustainability and climate adaptation.

Named after Wangari Maathai who was a Kenyan environmentalist and the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize and founder of the Green Belt Movement, this fellowship seeks to uphold her vision by equipping young Tanzanian leaders with essential knowledge, mentorship, and financial support to drive impactful climate action in their communities.

Climate change awareness is important, but action is essential for meaningful impact. The Wangari Maathai Fellowship was formed through insights gained from previous experiences with young climate leaders, where they identified a financial gap hindering their ability to implement community-driven climate solutions. To bridge this gap, this fellowship is designed to provide knowledge, mentorship, and project financial support to empower leaders, strengthen climate resilience, promote policy engagement, and foster grassroots environmental activism.

Fellowship Components

  • Formal Learning: Fellows will engage in structured training sessions, both in-person and virtual, to enhance their knowledge of climate policy, advocacy, project development, personal development, and implementation strategies.
  • Hands-on Project Implementation: Fellows will design and execute a Climate Action Impact Project, addressing a key environmental challenge in their community.
  • Networking & Policy Engagement: Fellows will have opportunities to participate in climate events, interact with policymakers, and contribute to climate discussions.
  • Project Financial Support: Each fellow will receive a sub-grant to support their project, alongside mentorship from climate experts and community leaders.

Benefits

  • The fellowship provides 10 selected fellows with financial sub-grant of €500 each for climate project implementation together with professional mentorship, and skill-building opportunities to advance climate resilience initiatives.
  • Fellows will develop expertise in climate education, environmental governance, policy advocacy, personal development, and practical project implementation.
