Juan Pablo Alvarado Herrera from Colombia is OD Young Person of the Month – October 2025

The story of Juan Pablo Alvarado Herrera begins in Cali, Colombia, where he became the first in his family to graduate with two undergraduate degrees—Law and Psychology—breaking generational barriers and defying the limitations of his context.

Read more about his story:

From an early age, Juan Pablo understood that education could be the most powerful tool for transformation, not only for personal growth but for the empowerment of entire communities.

With perseverance and discipline, he gained access to highly competitive international fellowships and scholarships such as the Hansen Leadership Institute, MCW Global Fellowship, and the Carolina Foundation Scholarship, each with acceptance rates of only 1–3%. These opportunities not only broadened his global perspective but also became living proof for other young people in vulnerable neighborhoods that it is possible to dream beyond immediate realities and succeed.

With more than a decade of experience in the social sector, Juan Pablo has combined research, professional service, and mentorship to strengthen communities through education and inclusion. Today, he serves as Coordinator of Alliances and Volunteering at the Leonardo Da Vinci Foundation, an organization with over 40 years of legacy that serves 450 children and adolescents annually in Cali’s most marginalized areas, fostering creativity and leadership through art, culture, education, science, and entrepreneurship. In parallel, he also works at the Social Outreach Office of the Faculty of Education and Pedagogy at Universidad del Valle, a public university that serves more than 35,000 low- and middle-income students across southwestern Colombia. In these roles, Juan Pablo has designed and led initiatives that connect civil society, academia, governments, and international cooperation, amplifying resources and creating long-term opportunities for youth.

His Impact and Community Service:

Beyond his institutional responsibilities, Juan Pablo has devoted significant effort to mentoring young leaders across the globe. He serves as a mentor with MCW Global, Latin America Leadership Academy, KAS, USAID/Acdi-Voca, DosPuntoDos, and the Global Shapers’ Project Curie, multiplying his impact by supporting youth-led projects that promote peace, human rights, and sustainability in diverse contexts worldwide.

The journey has not been free of challenges. Growing up in a city affected by violence, poverty, and limited access to opportunities meant facing low expectations and systemic barriers. Yet, it was precisely these conditions that fueled his determination to prove that resilience, discipline, and global opportunities can redefine life trajectories and inspire others to believe in their own potential.

Recognitions and Awards Received:

Juan Pablo’s commitment has been recognized through distinctions such as the Napolitan Victory Award in 2023, 2024, and 2025; the Recognition for a Lifetime in Equality, Non-Discrimination, and Respect for Identities by the Mayor’s Office of Cali; and selection as one of the Top 12 innovators in the Opportunity Desk Impact Challenge 2023. These honors validate a career dedicated not only to leadership but also to transforming realities for over 1,500 children, adolescents, and young leaders in Colombia and beyond.

Ultimately, Juan Pablo considers his greatest achievement not the titles or awards, but the ability to inspire others to dream and act. His journey demonstrates that even from contexts of vulnerability, it is possible to access global leadership opportunities, create change, and build the rule of law as a lived reality of dignity, justice, and equality for all.
