Top 8 College Essay Writing Tips to Help You Succeed

You’ve filled out your application and submitted it, but there’s still one major part of college admission left – the essay. As daunting as it may seem, you should know that this is where all the difference can be made when it comes to being accepted or rejected by the school of your choice. We’re talking about some serious importance here, so make sure to check out our list of 8 college essay writing tips that will help you succeed and let you get into your top schools!

  • Share an Interesting Experience

In college, you’ll be required to write a lot of essays. This can be overwhelming for students, especially because most haven’t written enough personal essays in high school (some never have). If you feel like you need essay help, consider tapping into your past experiences. Sharing something interesting from your childhood or adolescence is a great way to start an essay and build on it from there.

  • Use Humor Wisely

If you want your essay to stand out, don’t force it. If an essay topic is funny, don’t try too hard to make it funny; and if a topic isn’t funny, don’t try to make it funny. Be natural and let your personality shine through on paper. When I read college essays for my admissions consulting business, I always look for humor that comes naturally from an author rather than something forced by his or her parents. Humor in essays should be genuine, not forced. It also helps if applicants can poke fun at themselves in their essays—and if they can do so with some self-awareness.

  • Make it Personal

As admissions officers read through thousands of essays, they are looking for something unique—something that makes your essay stand out from all of those around it. If you want them to notice you, make sure your essay is personal; college essays don’t have to be long in order to convey who you are and what matters most in your life. Show off your personality by writing about a meaningful experience or an important person in your life. This will not only help you express yourself more clearly, but also show admission officers why you would be a great fit at their school.

  • Take Advantage of What You Know

It’s an easy way to hone your skills and show that you have a talent for writing, both of which are much-appreciated traits for admissions officers. Many students who decide on college essay help even land more prestigious scholarships as a result of their winning essays. When applying, try asking a teacher or friend whose writing they admire to review your essay before sending it in (or hire a professional service like MyPerfectApproach if you need some help). The feedback you get will likely be priceless!

  • Do your Research

In a world where everything can be Googled, it’s amazing how many people don’t take 10 minutes to look up an APA format citation. When writing your college essay, understand that admissions counselors are looking for well-researched and well-written essays. The easiest way to do this is by using credible sources (i.e., not Wikipedia) that back up your essay points and make you look like an expert on your subject matter. Your future may depend on it!

  • Write with Impeccable Grammar

The words in your college essay need to be flawless even if it means you’ll have to payforessay. Many admissions officers will make judgments about you based on how you write. This is not a big deal if you’re a freshman in high school, but it can be a huge problem if you’re an applicant for graduate school or law school. No matter how interesting your ideas are, no one will read them if they cannot understand what you wrote. Proofread every word of your college essay at least twice before submitting it for review!

  • Proofread! Proofread! Proofread!

Making a single typo can change your entire meaning. Remember that professional readers are going to read your essay multiple times, so make sure you check over your work carefully. And you’re not finished until you’ve had another person look it over as well. If English isn’t your first language, ask a friend or family member who is fluent in English for help.
