Deadline: September 15, 2022

Applications are open for the IWMF Global Health Reporting Initiative: Vaccines and Immunization in Africa & the Caribbean 2022-2023. The IWMF will offer its Global Health Reporting Initiative (GHRI), focused on vaccines and immunization, for a second generation of journalists in Africa and Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) member countries.

Established with the support of the Sabin Vaccine Institute’s Immunization Advocates program, this 9-month, virtual fellowship will take place from October 2022 through June 2023.

Programme Details

The IWMF will select a total of 30 journalists in Africa and CARPHA member countries in the Caribbean to participate in their GHRI. Beginning in October 2022, the cohort will participate in an online, English-language course that will provide access to sources who are public health and science-related experts on vaccines, public health, trade, social and behavioral communications, and global health policy.

At the end of the course, in February 2023, the IWMF will award competitive reporting grants to support the production of in-depth, fact-based, high-quality reporting on vaccines, especially regarding issues of vaccine acceptance and demand. Journalists who are awarded a reporting grant will be mentored by a senior public health or science reporter. The GHRI will enable journalists to better inform public health influencers and communities about vaccines.

Eligibility

  • The GHRI is open to women, men, and nonbinary journalists.
  • Applicants must reside and work in a low- or middle-income country in Africa or in a Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) member country in the Caribbean; preference will be given to applicants from low- and middle-income CARPHA countries (as categorized by the World Bank).
  • Applicants must be full-time, professional working journalists with at least two years of journalism experience.
  • Journalists of all backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to apply; early and mid-career journalists will be given priority.
  • Journalists must be fluent in English to fully participate in and benefit from the Initiative.
  • Journalists who are selected will be expected to complete approximately 30 hours of online, synchronous learning; a calendar will be provided in advance.

Application

The IWMF will accept applications until September 15, 2022, at 11:59 pm ET.
