Bassem Sabry Program 2023 for Young Egyptian Journalists & Analysts

Applications are open for the Bassem Sabry Program 2023. In 2015, the French Embassy and the Institut Français in Egypt launched an annual program aimed at young Egyptian journalists and analysts who want to learn about France and the major debates in French society.

The Bassem Sabri program offers the selected winner the opportunity to visit France for a week during which she/he can:

  • Establish deep links and exchanges of views with professionals in the French media field from a training perspective and within the framework of developing a network of professional relations in France and exchanging experiences related to good professional practices.
  • The winner selects a topic and addresses it in depth through a field investigation or the production of a press report.

About Bassem Sabry

Bassem Sabry was a young analyst and Egyptian writer who wrote the blog “An Arab citizen”, one of the most respected blogs by readers. An advocate for civil and political liberties and interested in raising the level of public debate and making it available to as many public as possible, Bassem Sabri died in 2014.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be an Egyptian national;
  • For men, obtain a travel permit from their recruitment office;
  • Age under 35 years;
  • The applicant must have published at least two articles;
  • The applicant does not have to speak French or English.

Obligation

The winner is obliged to write, in the month following the end of the program, an analytical report on his visit to France, in particular on the extent to which the visit has benefited professionally and is beneficial to his/her career. It is also hoped that the winner will publish a press report on the subject he investigated during his visit to France.

Selection

After the closing of the nomination, a pre-selection will be made according to the files received, and the pre-selected applicants will be contacted for an interview during the week of 17-21 September. The visit to France will take place in November 2023.

Application

Each applicant must submit the following:

  • One or two published articles (Word version or Acrobat Reader) translated into English or French;
  • A curriculum vitae in English or French;
  • For the purpose of conducting an investigation or press report:
    • submit a detailed draft of what the applicant intends to do during his visit to France (subject of the investigation? angle of intake? people to meet? with details as much as possible, places to visit? What is the expected professional return? Future projects after the visit?)
  • In addition: For the purpose of conducting exchanges of views and getting to know professionals in the French media field:
    • submit a dossier explaining the applicant’s short- and medium-term career objectives (what technical or methodological skills would the applicant wish to improve or acquire? what content would he or she wish to edit or produce, if he would like to specialize in a particular field, etc.), the names of the French professionals and/or media he would like to interview.
  • The file must be submitted before August 31, 2023, at 11.59 p.m., to the following addresses: [email protected] and [email protected]
