Deadline: November 5, 2023

Applications are open for the True Story Award 2024. The True Story Award is the first global journalism prize. Its aim is to make reporters’ voices known beyond the borders of their home countries, and in doing so to increase the diversity of perspectives offered in the media.

The True Story Award will be conferred by an independent foundation and honours reporters writing in 10 languages, who have distinguished themselves by the depth of their research, the quality of their journalism and its social relevance.

Prizes

The underlying core of the award is the gathering of journalists from all over the world and the exchange with audience in Bern. The 36 nominees selected by the local Jurys (one person per nominated text) will be invited to present their work at the True Story Festival from May 24 to 26, 2024.

The main jury will select the three best texts from the 36 nominees, who will be rewarded as follows:

  • First prize: 25 000 francs.
  • Second prize: 15 000 francs.
  • Third prize: 10 000 francs.

The award ceremony will be held as part of a festival on Friday, May 24, 2024, in Bern, Switzerland.

Eligibility

  • For the True Story Award 2024, reportage from all over the world can be submitted.
  • Texts should have been published between September 1, 2022 and September 30, 2023 in daily or weekly newspapers, magazines, or online.

Requirements

  • The texts’ length should be between 3 000 and 17 000 words.
  • Re-published texts, books and manuscripts are ineligible.
  • Visual and audiovisual works are ineligible.
  • Essays, biographies and historical non-fiction are ineligible.
  • Texts can be submitted by the authors or by editors.
  • In submitting their work, authors declare that their work covers actually researched events and that it complies with journalistic standards.

Authors have the following two options for submitting articles from any languages other than the 10 main languages:

  • Translate their text into English and submit it under the category «World I», «World II» or «Europe».
  • Submit their text in the original language under the category «World I», «World II» or «Europe».
In this case, we also require a summary in English (at least 400 words). The original texts will be reviewed by native-speaking readers from our network. Selected texts will then be translated into English for evaluation by the jury.

Application

The submission deadline is Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 12:00 pm (noon, CEST).
Late submissions will not be considered.
