Deadline: January 19, 2024

Applications for the GEO Young Reporter Fellowship 2024 are now open. For the sixth year in a row, GEO’s editorial team is offering the GEO Young Reporter Fellowship. Recognized for the excellence of its journalism in the field for nearly 45 years, the title supports the new generation of journalists and photojournalists through this competition. The winner will have their work published in GEO thanks to funding for their reporting and mentoring by the magazine’s editorial team.

The jury, which brings together GEO’s editor-in-chief and editorial representatives, as well as leading reporters, will study in February the projects that fall within the editorial line of the title. That is to say, dealing in particular with the discovery of new territories, the environment, different cultures and societies, and are the most likely to enrich readers. The project with the most votes wins the grant.

Benefits

  • The winner receives funding of €5,000 to produce their report. GEO’s editorial team brings in an experienced journalist or photographer (as needed) to publish the story in the magazine and on the GEO website.
  • Before going out into the field, the winner receives briefings with the editorial staff to help them better adapt their work to magazine writing and that of GEO, as well as concrete advice on the organisation and logistics of the report.
  • At any time, he can request the assistance of a seasoned journalist from the newsroom, who follows the project from start to finish, as GEO does with its collaborators. During the production of the report, the winner also benefits from insurance provided by Prisma Media.

Eligibility

  • Open to journalists and photojournalists;
  • Applicants should be between the ages of 18 and 30.

Application

  • Submit your project to the editorial staff of GEO, in the form of an application file containing:
    • 1 CV (1 page maximum)
    • 1 cover letter (1 page maximum)
    • 1 synopsis of the topic.
  • The topics that will be examined by the selection committee are all those that fall within the usual territory of GEO: discovery of new territories, environment, peoples and societies, geopolitics.
  • Once the applications have been received, the selection committee, led by the Editor-in-Chief of GEO, will carry out an initial screening on the basis of the applications. Among those with the highest scores, the selection committee will select the projects that best suit GEO’s editorial line and the information of its readers. These will then be proposed to the jury, which will choose the best.
  • The winner will be invited to conduct briefings with the editorial team before embarking on the execution of their project. He/she will work on his/her angle with a GEO department head and/or the photo department. He will thus be able to benefit from the experience in the field of a reporter seasoned in GEO’s methods and working conditions. On his return, he will participate in a “debrief” before embarking on the writing of his article or in his photo choice work.
