Applications are open for the Shireen Abu Akleh Fellowship 2024. ARIJ announces the opening of competition for a job opportunity in its editorial department, as part of the second Shireen Abu Akleh Fellowship, for a period of six months, starting in mid-January 2024.
This grant was announced for the first time at the opening of the fifteenth ARIJ Forum, in honor of the martyr Shireen Abu Akleh, and a Palestinian donor – who preferred not to be named – sponsored this grant.
Shireen Abu Akleh was a prominent Palestinian-American journalist who worked as a reporter for 25 years for Al Jazeera, before she was killed by an Israeli soldier while wearing a blue press vest and covering a raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Abu Akleh was one of the most prominent names across the Middle East for her decades of reporting in the Palestinian territories and seen as a role model for many Arab and Palestinian women.
Benefits
- ARIJ will provide a fee of $800 per month for the participating fellow, in addition to covering travel and accommodation costs in Amman.
Eligibility
- Journalists and investigative editors of Palestinian origin can apply for this scholarship, provided that they have at least four years of journalistic experience, and that the application includes samples of published works.
- The applicant is also required to work full-time with ARIJ for the six months, and to be able to complete an investigation during the fellowship period, on issues to be agreed upon with the editorial board. Acceptance of the fellowship application requires a proposal for an investigative investigation.
Application
Application starts on December 1, 2023, until December 31, 2023, and the fellowship begins in mid-January 2024.
