13 Things You Need to Know About Opportunity Desk – Celebrating 13 Years of Access and Impact

On October 10, Thirteen years ago, in Calabar, Cross River State, a young woman sat in front of her laptop, frustrated but hopeful. Her name is Grace Ihejiamaizu. At the time, she was just a student trying to figure things out, full of dreams, yet constantly running into walls that made those dreams feel out of reach. She saw how access to information could change lives. A scholarship could send someone abroad. A fellowship could birth a new project. A single opportunity could change a whole story.

But most young people around her simply didn’t know where to look.So Grace decided to do something about it. With just her laptop and an internet connection, she started sharing opportunities she found online, scholarships, conferences, fellowships, anything that could help someone grow. She called it Opportunity Desk. She had no idea that what began in a quiet room in Calabar would one day grow into a global community connecting millions of young people across the world to life-changing opportunities. Today, Opportunity Desk turns 13, and it is still doing exactly what it was created to do: helping  people find their way to growth, learning, and global impact.

Here are 13 things you should know about Opportunity Desk:

1. What is Opportunity Desk?
Opportunity Desk (OD) is a digital media platform that curates and shares global opportunities, scholarships, fellowships, grants, internships, jobs, trainings, conferences, and more, especially aimed at youth around the world.

2. Who Founded Opportunity Desk?
Opportunity Desk was Founded by Grace Ihejiamaizu in 2012 she currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer.

3. Foundation & Mission
Established in 2012, OD was born out of a vision to “bridge the opportunity gap”, to democratize access to knowledge about opportunities that tend to remain hidden for many. Its mission is deeply human-centric: to ensure that regardless of background, geography, gender identity, or socio-economic status, young people can access the doors to growth.

4. Scope of Opportunities Covered
OD doesn’t limit itself to one category. It covers:

  • Scholarships (undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD)
  • Fellowships and grants
  • Jobs, internships, volunteering roles
  • Conferences, trainings, workshops
  • Awards, competitions, and other growth programs

    5. Global Reach & Impact

OD has reached thousands of young people from over 200 countries.  It garners over 1,000,000 monthly website views and engages over 500,000 people across its social media platforms.

6. Uniqueness & Differentiators – What makes OD stand out:

  • Curation + Context: It doesn’t just list opportunities; it often adds tips, guidance, and “how-to” supports.
  • Inclusivity focus: OD explicitly commits to non-discrimination across gender identity, disability, socioeconomic status, etc.
  • Supplementary programs: OD runs mentorship initiatives, highlights success stories, runs “Young Person of the Month” features, and an annual “Impact Challenge” among others.
  • Audience engagement: It doesn’t treat its audience passively, it interacts, amplifies stories, guides application efforts.

    7. Key Programs & Initiatives
  • Mentorship Programs: For deeper guidance beyond just opportunity listings.
  • Young Person of the Month (YPOM): A regular spotlight on outstanding youth worldwide.
  • Impact Challenge / ODIC: Annual contests / challenges that provide visibility, funding, or support to youth-led ideas.
  • Open Days / Anniversary Events: For community-building, sharing reflections, and strategic engagement.

8. Audience & Community

OD’s core audience is ambitious youth, early-career changemakers, students, aspiring professionals, especially those who face barriers to accessing global opportunities.  The platform builds a community via its social media, mailing lists, and interactive programs (mentorship, spotlights).

9. Success Stories & Visibility
OD actively documents the journeys of those who used its platform to succeed, scholarship winners, fellows, entrepreneurs, and shares these widely to inspire and guide others. These testimonials not only validate the model but generate trust and momentum.

10. How You Can Use OD (as a user / partner / promoter)

  • As a youth / aspirant: Subscribe to their newsletter, actively check listings, engage with tips and application guides, apply for matched opportunities.
  • As a development org or NGO: Partner with OD to share your opportunities; co-host events; sponsor mentorship or challenge programs.
  • As a donor / funder: Support OD’s capacity to scale (e.g., technology, outreach, translation, localization)
  • As an influencer / advocate: Amplify success stories; mobilize networks to use OD; encourage contributions and collaborations.

11.  “Go Global with Opportunities” – A Resource to Help You Go Global

In 2018, Grace Ihejiamaizu wrote Go Global with Opportunities: Every Young Person’s Guide to Accessing Global Opportunities, published as a paperback on November 8, 2018. The book is a one-of-a-kind guide that draws from her personal journey, years of research, and countless stories from Opportunity Desk.It teaches young people how to move from local dreamers to global achievers, unpacking the mindset, tools, and steps to tap into global platforms. For many, this book became their first real roadmap to navigating the global opportunity space.

12. Advertise on Opportunity Desk
