Deadline: July 19, 2026
Applications are open for the EJN Story Grants to Report on Business Responses to Climate Change in Thailand 2026. Internews’ Earth Journalism Network’s (EJN) Business and Climate and Media Initiative (BCMI) aims to increase the quality and quantity of reporting on the private sector’s contribution to climate change, as well as its role in advancing climate mitigation, adaptation and innovative financing solutions.
EJN is pleased to offer up to 10 story grants of up to EUR 1,500 to selected journalists to produce in-depth reports on business response to climate change in Thailand. In addition to financial support, selected grantees will receive editorial guidance and mentorship from experienced journalists throughout the reporting and production process.
Story Themes
They welcome pitches for stories that focus on, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Business responses to Thailand’s climate policies, including the draft Climate Change Act, Thailand Taxonomy, carbon pricing mechanisms and the country’s pathway toward carbon neutrality and net zero.
- How Thai businesses are adapting to international sustainability requirements, including the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), supply chain due diligence regulations and evolving ESG expectations.
- Climate finance and investment, including green and sustainability bonds, blended finance, transition finance and the role of financial institutions in supporting decarbonization.
- Carbon markets, including voluntary carbon markets, blue carbon, forest carbon projects and questions of integrity, equity and benefit sharing.
- Corporate climate commitments, emissions disclosures and greenwashing, including scrutiny of net-zero claims, offsets and environmental reporting.
- Innovative technologies, business models and locally led solutions that help businesses reduce emissions, build climate resilience or accelerate a just transition.
- The opportunities and challenges facing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as they navigate the transition to a low-carbon economy.
They particularly encourage proposals that adopt a solutions journalism approach while maintaining rigorous, evidence-based reporting and accountability. Stories should examine not only promising innovations and business practices but also their effectiveness, scalability, trade-offs and unintended consequences.
Grant
- They expect to award up to 10 story grants of up to 1,500 EUR each.
Eligibility
- Applicants must come from Thailand. While this opportunity is open to all eligible journalists, priority will be given to participants of EJN’s Thailand Business and Climate Net Zero workshop held in June 2026.
- Applications are open to journalists working in any medium (online, print, television or radio) and other professional content producers with demonstrated reporting experience. They welcome applications from both early-career and experienced journalists, including freelancers and staff from international, national, local and community-based media organizations.
- Applications from teams of journalists are welcome. However, each team must designate one lead applicant, who will serve as the primary point of contact with EJN and, if selected, will be responsible for receiving and administering the grant on behalf of the team.
- Applications may be submitted in either English or Thai. Applicants should have a working knowledge of English or arrange for translation support to facilitate communication with EJN staff throughout the grant period.
- EJN reserves the right to disqualify applicants found to have engaged in unethical or improper professional conduct, including, but not limited to, submitting AI-generated content as their own work.
Judging Criteria
Applicants should consider the following points when devising their proposals.
- Relevance: Does the proposal meet the criteria and objectives of the call? Why does this story matter and to whom? Is the main idea, context and overall value to the target audience clearly defined?
- Angle: If the report has been covered, does your proposal bring new insights to the topic or offer a fresh angle?
- Reach: Does the proposed media outlet have a wide reach? Journalists publishing their work at outlets that typically restrict content behind paywalls are encouraged to secure commitments to publish from additional outlets, or request an exception to ensure their EJN-supported report remains accessible to audiences.
- Impact: Does the proposal have a compelling narrative or in-depth element that will inform and engage, draw attention, trigger debate and spur action?
- Innovative storytelling: The use of creative approaches, multimedia and data visualization will be considered a plus.
- Plan for timely publication: Journalists whether freelance or employed at a media outlet, will need to include a letter of support from an editor in their application, committing to publish the reports by October 31, 2026.
