Canon Collins Masters Scholarship 2016 For Southern Africans to Study in the UK (Fully-Funded)

Canon Collins Trust is now accepting applications for scholarships to support taught masters degree programmes at UK universities (listed below), commencing in September 2016.

Scholarship Award

The scholarships cover full tuition fees, a monthly stipend, a return economy flight, a settling-in allowance and other support whilst in the UK.

Eligibility

Applicants for any of these awards must:

  • Be a national of, and normally resident in, one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
  • Be in possession of a good Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application.
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field. In addition, there are subject restrictions at certain universities.

Applicants for the 2016-17 UK Scholarship programme will be assessed on the basis of the information that they supply on their application form against the criteria outlined below

  • Work Experiences
  • Leadership Competencies and personal qualities
  • Commitment to country/community
  • Application form. The application form matters. Applicants should:
    (i) Demonstrate a good command of English
    (ii) Answer all of the questions properly and completely
    (iii) Complete the application and deliver all supporting documents by the deadline

Scholarship Institutions

  • School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS) . Canon Collins in conjunction with SOAS will co-fund one or two scholarships annually. Applicants can apply for any fulltime one-year taught master’s course at this university.
  • University of Sussex . Canon Collins partners with the Mandela Scholarship Fund at the University of Sussex to fund three awards annually. Applicants can apply for any full-time one-year taught master’s course at this university.
  • Queen Mary, University of London (The Simon and Deirdre Gaskell Scholarship at Queen Mary) The scholarship at Queen Mary is funded by Simon and Deirdre Gaskell and limited to the MSc in Global Public Health and Policy.
  • University of Edinburgh, MSc in African Studies scholarship. The scholarship is co-funded by the Canon Collins Trust and the University of Edinburgh, and is limited to the MSc in African Studies.

How to Apply

The online application form is of primary importance as it serves as the basis for assessment. The online application form can be found on the Canon Collins Trust website, when the call for applications is open. You will find full instructions online when you start a new form. It is your responsibility to ensure that your application is complete and accurate before submitting your application online. All sections of the form need to be complete before the system will allow the application form to be submitted. Information can be saved and the application form edited until the applicant chooses to submit

All applicants are required to submit the following supporting documentation:

  • Certified copy of undergraduate degree certificate, if available
  • Certified academic transcripts
  • Reference letters from two referees
  • ID document (The following are acceptable: Passport, Birth Certificate, Driver’s License)
  • Proof of refugee status, if applicable. Ideally, you should submit an academic reference (preferably from your current supervisor) and a reference from an employer. You should ask your referees to write a reference that relates to your application for this scholarship. It should outline your strengths as an applicant, demonstrate your capacity to study at the level required, explain how you would benefit from further study and identify your potential impact in the future.

Getting a place on your course

You must apply separately to the university of your choice. Scholarships will only be awarded upon confirmation that applicants have been offered a place at one of the above universities. If you are offered a scholarship but fail to get a place on a course, we will withdraw the offer. At the time of applying for a scholarship applicants are expected to be in the process of applying for admission to the university of their choice.
