Deadline: September 20, 2026
Applications are open for the London AI Safety Research (LASR) Labs Winter 2027. London AI Safety Research Labs is a technical AI Safety research programme focused on reducing the risk of loss of control to advanced AI. They focus on action-relevant questions tackling concrete threat models. Participants work in teams of three to four, supervised by an experienced AI safety researcher, to take a research project from proposal to publication over 13 weeks. Teams work full-time and in person from the London Initiative for Safe AI, alongside AI safety organisations and researchers.
Alumni from previous cohorts have gone on to work at UK AISI, Apollo Research, Geodesic Research, OpenAI, Open Philanthropy and more, while others have founded AI safety organisations or pursued independent research.
Benefits
- Participants receive an £15,000 stipend to cover living expenses in London, and organisers will also provide food, office space, and travel.
Eligibility
They are looking for applicants with the following skills:
- Technical ability: Machine learning engineering experience and strong quantitative skills.
- Research ability: Willingness to experiment, iterate, and dive into execution under uncertainty. An ability to develop a theory of change for a project focussed on impact.
- Communication skills: An ability to clearly articulate the outcomes and implications of experiments, coupled with transparent reasoning.
There are no specific requirements for experience, but we anticipate successful applicants will have done some of these things:
- Built something substantial they can point to: a research result, a system or tool, an analysis, an experiment, or a proof, in any field, ML or not.
- Experience working with LLMs, whether in research, engineering, or serious self-directed projects.
- Taken real steps toward this kind of work on their own initiative, for example self-teaching ML, switching from another field, or starting a research project independently.
Application
LASR Labs is a 13-week research programme in AI safety running from January 11th – April 9th. You’ll write a technical paper in a team of 3-4 with supervision from an experienced researcher. The programme is paid and full-time in London.
The deadline to apply is September 20th, 23:59 GMT.
