Each year the African World Heritage Fund provides Conservation Grants to African State parties in order to support and implement activities which focus on improving the State of Conservation of World Heritage properties in Africa. Proposals must definitely address challenges affecting the state of conservation of the heritage property in question.
The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) is an inter-governmental organisation that was launched in 2006. Its mission is to support the effective conservation and protection of natural and cultural heritage of outstanding universal value in Africa. The African Members States of UNESCO and the African Union, with the aim to develop a strategy to deal with the challenges that many African countries meet in implementing the 1972 World Heritage Convention, initiated the AWHF.
Grants
- AWHF grant will only cover direct costs related to the project activities;
- Applicants should provide detailed budget in US$ for every activity to be implemented;
- Applicants should indicate the State Parties’ contribution to the project.
Eligibility
- All counties or regions in Africa are eligible, but project activities are restricted to World Heritage Sites as declared by UNESCO.
- All government institutions involved in the management and protection of World Heritage sites can apply for the AWHF Grant. However, the application must be approved by the Head/Director of the heritage institution or organization accompanied by a cover letter endorsing the project.
- Project has to implemented within the time frame of 12 months.
