French Embassy of South Africa PhD Research Grants 2017

Deadline: Rolling Basis

The French Embassy of South Africa bursary programme is currently proposing grants for 2017 to facilitate international academic and scientific mobility for researchers towards French institutions of higher education. The programme offers the opportunity to doctoral students to integrate into establishments in France for specified periods of time in order to participate in a collaborative research project as part of their doctoral thesis programme. Grants are awarded for a stay in France of 3 to 6 months per year, renewable for up to three years.

Grants

Funding can be offered to cover some or all of the following expenses:

  • Round-trip airfare;
  • Health insurance;
  • A monthly stipend towards living expenses;
  • Schengen visa fees.

Applications for partial grants based on a co- funding agreement will be favoured.

Eligibility

  • Double Registration for PhD at a South African and French institution (a “co- tutelle” agreement);
  • Cooperation agreement between South African supervisor, and French co- supervisor, supporting proposed research project;
  • Applications from all academic disciplines will be considered;
  • No knowledge of French language required, provided the student will be able to conduct research in English.

Selection Criteria

Candidates are selected based on:

  • Academic achievement;
  • Motivation;
  • Coherence of application – the structure and content of the motivation letter, as reflected in the student’s academic, professional and personal objectives, choice of institution, etc;
  • Relevance of research proposed;
  • Previous practical activities or experience in the relevant academic or professional field.

Application Process

Download and complete the application form. Applications are to be submitted via e-mail, to [email protected].

Application Format

Students are expected to submit the following (scanned or saved in separate PDF files only, clearly marked):

  • Fully completed and signed application form;
  • Motivation letter (no longer than two pages);
  • Curriculum vitae (no longer than two pages);
  • Copy of valid passport;
  • Copy of all degree certificates and academic transcripts (both for complete and incomplete qualifications);
  • Outline of research project (no longer than two pages);
  • Supporting letter from supervisor in South Africa;
  • Supporting letter from supervisor in France;
  • Copy of co-tutelle agreement between South African and French university.

It remains the student’s responsibility to ensure that all of these documents are submitted. If any of the above documents are not received, the student’s application may be considered as incomplete. Note: Please follow these guidelines strictly, and do not submit any other documents
