Research of Children’s Rights in Africa – Call for Country and Regional Researchers

The African Children’s Rights Unit of the Centre of Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria is carrying out a research project to assess the impact of the reporting process on the realisation of children’s rights in Africa. They are currently looking for country researchers and regional researchers as well as regional coordinating researchers to assist with this process.

Call for Country and Regional Researchers

The research questions include the following:

  • Are reporting processes in Africa consultative and participatory?
  • Do the reports represent and reflect the actual situation of children in Africa?
  • How accurate, relevant and functional are concluding observations by treaty bodies?
  • What implementation and follow up mechanisms have been put in place by states and treaty bodies to ensure the implementation of the recommendations?
  • Have the reports resulted in progress on the ground for children in the reporting country?
  • What practical steps should be taken to maximise the impact of reporting on the realisation of children’s rights in Africa?

The Centre for Human Rights is currently looking for country researchers in the following countires: Burkina Faso, Egypt, Eritrea, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Chad, Congo, DRC, Madagascar, Mauritius, Malawi, Somalia and South Sudan.

Call for Regional Coordinating Researchers

The Centre for Human Rights is currently looking for regional coordinating researchers to undertake this research. There will be one regional coordinating researcher for:

  • The Central African region covering the following countries: Chad, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda;
  • The Eastern Africa Region covering the following countries: Eritrea, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda;
  • The Northern African Region covering the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia;
  • West African Region covering the following countries: Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo;
  • Southern Africa Region covering the following countries: Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius and Tanzania;
  • Somalia and South Sudan are special case studies to be handled differently.

The regional coordinating researchers will undertake the following activities:

  • Act as a country researcher for their own country.
  • Coordinate the research activities of researchers in the countries within the region.
  • Write a consolidated report, using evidence generated by country researchers, for the purpose of publication in a peer reviewed book.

Eligibility and Requirements for both country and regional researchers

Candidates should;

  • Either be based in the research countries or come from those countries
  • Have postgraduate degree in a relevant field.
  • Have proven records of research and publication.
  • Have sound knowledge of international human rights system in general and children’s rights system in particular.
  • Possess managerial expertise and experience.

Kindly indicate in your inception report whether you are applying to be considered as country researcher and for which country. If you are applying as a regional coordinating researcher please kindly indicate which region you are interested in and which country you will cover as a country researcher.
