Applications are open for the WRI/EJN Environmental Data Journalism Workshop 2019 for Indonesian Journalists. Resource Watch and Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) are conducting a workshop in Jakarta in late August for journalists to learn how to discover, use and visualize open data in their environmental reporting.
To help journalists and decision-makers find, visualize and share the best available data on the environment and human development, the World Resources Institute (WRI) created Resource Watch. On this platform, you can find data and maps on deforestation, coral reef bleaching, coastal flooding, crops, fishing, fires and other natural disasters, population numbers, oil spills, air quality, poverty, power plants, human migration and much more. You can then overlay them to see interconnections between the issues – all for free.
In partnership with Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), Resource Watch is coming to Jakarta to train journalists on how to use the Resource Watch platform, showcase tools and tips for data analysis, reveal best practices for working with open data and highlight the value of incorporating data into stories. Workshop participants will have the ability to apply for funding to produce data-driven narrative stories using the tools and data available on Resource Watch.
Workshop Details
The workshop is an opportunity for journalists to get hands-on training on how to locate, analyze, understand and visualize data in their reporting. Participants will get a detailed tutorial on how to use the Resource Watch platform and will have the opportunity to interact with WRI experts on GIS analysis and environmental issues. They’ll also learn the ropes of data-driven storytelling from EJN.
- The workshop will be held at the World Resource Institute’s Indonesia office in Jakarta, Indonesia, on August 26 and 27, 2019.
- Selected participants will be provided with meals and a travel allowance during the course of the workshop.
- Journalists from print, online media, radio and television are all encouraged to apply. Women journalists and young journalists are especially encouraged to apply.
- Sessions will be held in English with simultaneous interpretation to/from Bahasa Indonesia.
Eligibility
- Open to Indonesian journalists based in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, or Bekasi;
- Applicants agree to commit to attend all days of the workshop;
- To have a record of reporting on scientific, environmental, natural resource management and/or infrastructural development topics;
- Experience with data and data analysis is preferred but not required;
- If you produce stories for your home media organizations as a result of your attendance at the workshop, be willing to post copies of them on Earth Journalism Network website, Ekuatorial website and the Resource Watch blog;
- A letter from your editor or media outlet supporting your application (freelancers are welcome but must have a letter of support from a media organization that will publish or broadcast your stories).
