Deadline: August 10, 2013

The West African Health Organization (WAHO), the Health Agency of ECOWAS and its partners have announced their Internship Programme for Young Professionals (YPIP) for the year 2013, starting in January 2014 and invites all citizens of the member countries of ECOWAS to apply. The goal of the programme is to equip young professionals with knowledge, skills and experience for effective management of health problems in West Africa.

About the YPIP

The programme was established to build the capacity of young ECOWAS citizens in health programme management by increasing their knowledge and competence in Public Health, Management & Leadership, Information & Computer Technology and a second official language of ECOWAS, whilst improving their competence in their core technical area of interest through a Mentoring system.

The 12 month Internship programme is divided into 6 stages (I – VI).

  • Stages I and IV will take place at the headquarters of WAHO in Burkina Faso, during which the Interns will acquire knowledge and competence in basic principles of public health, a second official language of ECOWAS, computer and new information technology as well as basic principles of management and leadership.
  • During stages II and V, the Interns would be posted to host Institutions in different countries in West Africa to acquire practical skills and competences in their technical areas of interest or professional specialisation. The technical areas should respond to the health needs of the sub-region and the priority domains of WAHO.

Applicants for the course of 2013 should have interest in one or more of the following priority technical areas: HIV/AIDS, Reproductive Health, Survival of the Child, Nutrition, The Prevention of Blindness, Malaria, Health Research, and The Control of Diseases.

Benefits and Program Packages

  • Laptop: Each intern is entitled to a laptop at the beginning of the training. The laptop becomes the property of intern if he/she successfully completes the programme
  • Host Institution: Each francophone intern will be placed in a host institution in an Anglophone West African country and vice versa for the Anglophone intern. The Portuguese intern will have to choose between English and French as the language to be learnt.
  • Transportation: WAHO would pay the airfares and other transportation costs from WAHO headquarters in Bobo-Dioulasso to and from the Host Institution. Transport cost during the course of working in the Institution should be borne by the Institution. The Intern would pay for his/her transportation to and from work from his/her monthly allowance.
  • Accommodation: Host Institutions would provide accommodation free of charge to the Intern as much as possible. Where this is not possible, the Institution would assist the Intern to secure a reasonably prised accommodation and pay for this.
  • Allowances: This information is available for those who will be admitted to the program.
  • Medical Coverage

Eligibility

All applicants must be citizens of ECOWAS member countries, must be available throughout the 12 month period and should have:

  1. obtained a university degree or equivalent within the past five years.
  2. fluency in reading and writing of at least one official ECOWAS language (English, French, Portuguese). Knowledge of a second language would be an advantage.
  3. basic competence in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
  4. Not be more 35 (thirty five) years old by 31st December 2012.
