Beit Trust is offering several scholarships to young Southern Africans for postgraduate Masters or PhD programs. Scholarships are taken up at a university in the United Kingdom, Ireland or South Africa, for study in a subject of the individual’s choice appropriate to the needs of the beneficial area.
Eligibility
- All applicants (except medical and veterinary doctors) must be under 30 years of age on 31 December of the year of application.
- Some experience of work after completion of a first degree is also desirable.
- Doctors and vets must be under 35 years of age on 31 December and should have completed 18 months of internship and preferably a one-year rural posting in the relevant country.
- Applicants who are domiciled in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe
- Prospective applicants, who must hold at least a degree of class 2.1.
Beit Scholarship Award
This award covers the following:
- Fees and costs of tuition and related academic expenses are paid by the Trust direct to the universities.
- Payment of a personal allowance, index linked in accordance with guidance from an independent authority covering maintenance support.
- Other allowances are paid for arrival, a laptop and printing of a thesis, and return home.
- Economy Class air passages are provided by the Trust for the initial journey to the place of study, and for the return at the end of the course.
- No allowances are paid for spouses or other family members.
Shared Scholarships
In addition to the Beits scholarship, shared awards for a taught Masters Degree are offered at the
- University of Cambridge (BC): BC Postgraduate Scholarship expenses are shared equally between The Beit Trust and the Cambridge Trust at the University of Cambridge.
- University of Cape Town (BCT): BCT Postgraduate Masters and Doctorate Scholarship expenses are shared between The Beit Trust and the University of Cape Town.
- University of Edinburgh (BE): BE Postgraduate Scholarship expenses are shared between The Beit Trust and the University of Edinburgh.
- University of Glasgow (BG): BG Postgraduate Medical Scholarship expenses are shared equally between The Beit Trust and the University of Glasgow.
- Imperial College London (BI): BI Postgraduate Scholarship expenses are shared between The Beit Trust and Imperial College.
- University of Leeds (BL): BL Postgraduate Scholarship expenses are shared between The Beit Trust and the University of Leeds, which undertakes the administration.
- University of Oxford -Wadham College (BOW): BOW Postgraduate Scholarships are shared equally between The Beit Trust and the University of Oxford.
- Rhodes University (BRU): BRU Postgraduate Scholarship expenses are partly met by Rhodes University. The Beit Trust handles the administration.
- Stellenbosch University (BS): BS Postgraduate Scholarship expenses are shared between the Beit Trust and StellenboschUniversity. The Beit Trust handles the administration.
- University of Strathclyde (BSC): BSC Postgraduate Engineering Scholarship expenses are shared equally between The Beit Trust and the University of Strathclyde.
- the University of Witwatersrand (BW): BW Postgraduate Scholarship expenses are shared between The Beit Trust and the University of Witwatersrand.
- The Beit-COSECSA Surgical in-country Scholarship is open to trainee surgeons.
In 2010 The Beit Trust established a five-year trial scheme to offer in-country Beit-COSECSA postgraduate surgical scholarships to one surgeon per year from each of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. These scholarships are undertaken at selected teaching hospitals in the Beit beneficial area in accordance with medical protocols set out by the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). Beit funding covers the costs of registration, enrolment, exam fees, international travel to COSECSA seminars, a computer, graduation costs at two levels, and a personal stipend. Membership of COSECSA may be gained after 2 years study (MSC), with Fellowship after 5 years (FSC). Note: There is no academic difference between shared Postgraduate Scholarships and solely Beit-funded Postgraduate Scholarships, but, for economic and pastoral reasons, selection boards generally favour partner-universities. Many Beit Scholars choose the Africa-friendly partner- universities listed above where shared costs permit a larger number of scholarships to be offered to the beneficial area.

- Zambians – you need to fill out an initial application form using this online initial application link. Applicants are urged to complete the online form as early as possible to establish whether they would qualify. If you do qualify, a form will be sent to you and you will be required to provide additional information and details. This information will include, but may not be restricted to, the following:-
(i) A fuller application form
(ii) A medical certificate from your doctor
(iii) A certified transcript of your degree results
(iv) A certified document of evidence of residency (National Registration Card or birth certificate)
(iv)Up to date CV showing all work experience
Only those applicants who state that they intend to return to work in the relevant country upon completion of the scholarship, and who can, if short-listed, present themselves for interview before a Beit Postgraduate Scholarship Selection Board in Harare, Blantyre or Lusaka at the beginning of December, will be considered.
*Malawian and Zimbabwean applicants do not need to fill out an initial application form.
