Deadline: April 15, 2019

Applications are open for the MacDowell Fellowship 2019. Each year about 300 Fellowships, or residencies, are awarded to artists in seven disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. A Fellowship consists of exclusive use of a private studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for two weeks to two months. MacDowell does not offer classes or instruction.

The MacDowell Colony is the nation’s leading artist colony. The Colony nurtures the arts by offering creative individuals of the highest talent an inspiring environment in which they can produce enduring works of the imagination.

Benefits

There are no residency fees. Travel grants as well as need-based stipends are available to open the residency experience to the broadest possible community of artists.

These financial assistance programs are intended to help with or cover the costs of traveling to and from MacDowell, as well as expenses which artists expect to incur while in residence, including rent and lost income.

Artists may apply for financial aid stipends and travel grants only if they are awarded a MacDowell Fellowship. Applications for assistance, which are made available as part of the confirmation of acceptance to MacDowell, are kept confidential. Artists of all disciplines are eligible to apply.

See more on funding.

Eligibility

  • MacDowell encourages applications from artists representing the widest possible range of perspectives and demographics.
  • Emerging and established artists may apply in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts.
  • Applicants who are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs as of the date of application are ineligible for a residency and therefore cannot apply.
  • Doctoral candidates who have finished all coursework may apply.

Application

Residencies are awarded based on a completed application to the Colony. Applications are chosen by a peer-review panel. Artists may apply only ONCE within a 24-month period – select the residency period that best suits your schedule.
