Entries are invited for the CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year 2019. The CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year showcases the very best in environmental photography.
Highlighting the terrible impacts being wrought on our planet by its most dominant species the competition also celebrates humanity’s innate ability to survive and innovate, lending hope to us all that we can overcome challenges to live sustainably. The competition supports the urgent calls to action of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and recognises the intricate interconnected nature of development, poverty reduction, equality, security and climate action and the unprecedented effort from all sectors of society needed to tackle the defining issues of our time.
They encourage entries that are contemporary, creative, resonant, challenging, original and beautiful, but most of all, images that will inspire people around the world to start taking care of our environment and responsibility for the affect our actions have.
Categories and Prizes

- Environmental Photographer of the Year: Celebrating powerful storytelling, the Environmental Photographer of the Year is awarded to a single image which triggers debate, inspires action and improves understanding of the causes, impacts and solutions to environmental change and social inequality. The winning photographer will receive a £2,000 cash prize, personalised certificate and spread and interview in one issue of CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Climate Action and Energy Prize: Revealing human connection to the natural world and our actions to preserve it, this category explores sustainable environmental and economic development, the natural and social value of the environment, affordable clean energy and innovative adaption and mitigation approaches to environmental change. The winning photographer will receive a £500 cash prize, personalised certificate and coverage in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Changing Environments Prize: Chronicling environmental change and the resilience of the individuals and communities facing adversity including extreme weather events, environmental destruction, energy security and conservation of our natural resources. The winning photographer will receive a £500 cash prize, personalised certificate and coverage in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Sustainable Cities Prize: Focusing on our built environments and the communities and animals that inhabit them, including environmental solutions from design, materials and structures, smart and resilient cities, transport, waste and the connections between nature, society and infrastructure in our urban environments. The winning photographer will receive a £500 cash prize, personalised certificate and coverage in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Water, Equality and Security Prize: Examining the intricate relationships between access to clean water and sanitation, gender equality and security this category explores our ever-increasing demand for water and the role of gender equality in every aspect of water management from water scarcity to flooding. The winning photographer will receive a £500 cash prize, personalised certificate and coverage in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Young Environmental Photographer of the Year: This category showcases the best in environmental photography through the lens of young photographers aged 21 or under, inspiring people around the world to protect and conserve our natural environment. The winning photographer will receive brand new camera equipment, personalised certificate and an interview in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
