Deadline: May 10, 2021

Apply for the Climate Tracker Restoring Africa’s Drylands Journalism Fellowship 2021 to be a part of the amazing team of young journalists from across Africa to receive training and gain full access to attend and cover the Global Landscapes Forum 2021.

More than half a billion people live and work in Africa’s drylands, among the most parched landscapes on the planet, and representing 43 percent of the continent. Smallholders nurture crops and graze livestock on land that is mostly rainfed — and rapidly degrading, due in part to the relentless, devastating force of climate change that threatens the rich biodiversity of these fragile landscapes.

On June 2-3, the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) will host the first-ever digital conference focused entirely on Africa’s drylands and how integrative restoration practices can see them flourish once again – GLF Africa 2021.

Be a part of the amazing team of young journalists from across Africa to receive training and gain full access to attend and cover this conference. Join in for inspiring speakers, the latest science, concerts, film screenings, virtual tours, networking, and the unexpected discoveries that always form part of this event.

If this sounds like something you’re interested in, then now is your time to submit a pitch of 150-200 words for a story focusing on drylands and ecosystem restoration in your country.

Benefits

  • One-on-One Training: Together with field experts, they will work alongside you as you partake in a series of training workshops ahead of the conference. You will get the chance to improve your practical skills and gain the required knowledge needed for effectively reporting on this critical issue.
  • Holistic Writing and Mentoring Experience: After the workshop, they will be selecting the best of the best to attend the GLF Africa 2021. This will be a wonderful opportunity to implement what you have learned from the training and produce powerful and impactful stories to be published in national and international publications. They will not abandon you after the training. Their team will continue mentoring your throughout the conference period, focusing on supporting you in developing your reporting plans and themes, encouraging cross border and collaborative stories, and creating avenues for you to boost your social media skills in covering the event.
  • Potential Grant up for Grabs: That is not all! The best 5 journalists will receive a long form storytelling grant to produce more in-depth pieces, as a follow-up from the conference. The higher the quality of your reporting during the conference and an ability to conduct in-depth reporting throughout will give you the edge.

Eligibility

  • Open for early career reporters across the African continent.
  • They are looking for journalists with a passion for learning and raising awareness about land management and conservation.
