Deadline: January 17, 2021

Applications are open for the Terra Summer Residency Fellowships 2022. The Terra Summer Residency is an annual, interdisciplinary program for doctoral scholars and artists worldwide.

The program encourages independent work on dissertations and artistic projects, while providing thematic seminars on topics of current interest to the field of American art, visual and material culture, and artistic practice. Mentoring by established scholars and artists is offered, as well as guest lectures from art professionals to foster reflection about more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable practices.

The Terra Foundation prioritizes scholarly and artistic projects that interrogate and broaden definitions of American art and supports projects engaged in transforming or complicating how the story of American art is told. To expand histories of American art, they encourage projects that reflect a commitment to inclusive and equitable research and creative practice; generate new scholarship and interpretive frameworks; employ critical methodologies and innovative models; and/or engage diverse partners and audiences. Given the international and interdisciplinary nature of the program, they encourage interest in and projects that allow for cross-cultural dialogue.

Funding

In addition to lodging and lunches, Terra Summer Residency fellows receive:

  • A $5,000 stipend (artists receive an additional $300 for the purchase of materials);
  • As well as a travel contribution (up to $500 for individuals traveling from Europe, up to $1,200 for individuals traveling from the US and Canada, and up to $1,500 for individuals traveling from additional destinations).

Eligibility

  • Candidates worldwide are invited to apply.
  • Applicants may be either:
    • Doctoral candidates of all disciplines researching American art and visual culture (for example, African American Studies, African Diaspora Studies, American Studies, Arab American Studies, Art History, Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Curatorial Studies, Disability Studies, English, Environmental Studies, Film Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Global Asian Studies, History, Latinx Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Migration Studies, Museum and Exhibition Studies, Native American and Indigenous Studies, Performance Studies, Philosophy, Refugee and Forced Migration Studies, and Social Sciences).
      • All visual art categories are eligible except architecture and commercial film/animation.
      • Candidates already at the writing stage of their dissertations are particularly encouraged to apply.
    • Artists with a Master of Fine Arts, other master’s degree, or its equivalent at the time of application.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants for the Terra Summer Residency will be assessed on multiple criteria, including:

  • the relevance of the project and awareness of current concerns in the field of American art and artistic practice; the project’s contribution to sharing expansive narratives of American art, including through cross-cultural perspectives; and the clarity of the thinking and writing
  • the feasibility of the project with regard to timeline, work plan, and objectives
  • examples of past work, understood as the artistic or scholarly originality and rigor achieved in the applicant’s previous work or studies, as well as their past artistic and scholarly accomplishments
  • the candidate’s ability to contribute to a collegial, intercultural, and interdisciplinary community

As the program’s working language is English, all applicants are expected to be fluent; knowledge of French is an asset but not required.

Application

To apply for this fellowship, applications must be submitted online. Applications will only be considered if they include a completed application form, the required materials therein, and two letters of recommendation.

  • Online Application Form for Doctoral Scholars
  • Online Application Form for Artists
