Deadline: November 18, 2022

Applications are invited for the California Health Equity Impact Fund 2023. The California Health Equity Impact Fund is designed for journalists who think big and want to make a difference by bringing untold stories to light about the systemic issues that stand in the way of good health for California families and communities.

Supported with a generous grant and five months of professional mentorship, participating reporters can expect to conclude this programme producing a substantial investigative or explanatory project.

This programme advances the Center for Health Journalism’s Impact Reporting model, which marries powerful narratives, data and community engagement to serve as a catalyst for change. Through their reporting, past grantees have changed the conversation about under-covered health issues, sparking new policies, practices and laws in their communities.

Grant

  • Grantees receive:
    • A $2,000-$10,000 stipend to help with reporting costs
    • Five months of professional mentorship from a veteran journalist
    • Monthly online development and brainstorming sessions with other reporters in their class.
  • Grantees also are eligible to apply for five months of professional mentorship in engaged journalism and $1,000-$2,000 to support those creative efforts.

Eligibility

  • Open to California-based professional journalists (including freelancers) or reporters from national outlets doing a California-focused project.
  • They have accepted reporters in the past from national outlets and small rural outlets.
  • They look for commitment to the reporting project, a passion for the topic, relevant skills and a health equity proposal that will serve local communities and families.

Application

Applications include:

  • Personal Statement and Project Proposal: A description of the project you’re pursuing for the Impact Fund. Consider these questions: What is your long-term goal for Impact for this project? How would you like to see the community or policy benefit from this work? What makes this reporting new or important? (No more than 500 words)
  • Deliverables Statement: Number of stories you’ll be reporting, and tentative story themes or focus, including any multimedia elements you plan to incorporate (photos, video, audio, graphics, etc) (750-1,000 words)
  • Proposed Budget: Provide a grant amount requested and a rough breakdown of how you plan to use the funds.
  • Three samples of your most recent work
  • Editor reference letter and completed Editor Checklist form
  • Resume
